As this book had yet to be reviewed, I bought it based on the reviews of Sophie King's How To Write Your First Novel and I wasn't disappointed. It is very easy to read with clear examples and short stories to illustrate the points being made. I have read several books in this genre including Cracking The Short Story Market by Ian Pattison and found this the most informally informative, whilst still taking the subject seriously. I had hoped to get hints on how to create interesting characters and plot whilst having a limited number of words; where to find ideas and how to construct dialogue, this book tackles all this well. There is also plenty of advice about what magazines want, how to look at subjects differently and hence how to be noticed by editors. A great read and highly motivational!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed! 26 July 2011
Format:Paperback
I wasn't impressed by this book. Useful advice is limited. It is possible to summarise the main points on 2 or 3 sheets of A4 paper. Much of the book is taken up by the author's own stories. The use of examples is, I agree, often very relevant. However, after a while, this book just reads like an advertisement for the author and the magazines she writes for. Also, some of the advice given by the author is questionable. She recommends using certain writing practices that other authors of similar 'how to' books recommend avoiding. This book felt like it had been thrown together. Indeed, there are a number of presentation errors. For example, page 109 is an exact replica of page 108 (2nd edition). This is ironic in a book which stresses that when submitting a piece of writing for consideration "Professional presentation is essential." All in all, I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Sophie 19 April 2011

This is a well written and useful book. It is full of good ideas and suggestions. It can be read from cover to cover but dipping in is just as helpful. Each chapter stands alone very well.
