By R. F. Stevens TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
At first glance it is a simple, straight-forward book. Bob tells us what he is going to show us, and then proceeds to do so, brilliantly.

But it is more than that, for it is full of anecdotes and relevant excerpts from his work, and all are skillfully used to illustrate and reinforce the points he is trying to make. The style is conversational, and easy to read, almost like a novel, while the nine chapter layout has clearly titled subsections and a contents summary, so should you wish to refer back to a portion, it is easy to find.

It is a clear window into the inner workings of the writer's mind, a delicious view on a jewel of precision and inspiration. I feel privileged to have been able to share his thoughts, and appreciate his guidance.

If you want to write, and sell, any GOOD Science Fiction, then please read this little gem first; your chances of success will be greatly enhanced if you take heed of what he has to offer.

Excellent Advice 18 Nov 1999
By Elise
Format:Paperback
Having an idea for a novel - like so many other people, I know, I decided to get some advice. I have now bought 4 books of this sort, and this is by far the best. Shaw claims that he has never written a story that hasn't (eventually) been published. His prose is witty and instructive at every step, and his advice is sensible.

I would recommend this to fans of science fiction, as well as those wanting to write it, simply because it sums up the genre so well. I've never read any of Shaw's work before this, but I intend to remedy that as soon as posible.

The best guide to write SF that I know of 19 April 2005
By isala - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It is a shame this one is out of print and difficult to get hold of, because it is good. Shaw is a distinguished British SF author. In this guide he assumes that the reader has overcome writer's block and know their grammar, and knows something about the mechanics of general writing. Therefore he gets down and dirty immediately into advice on how to write good SF! All his advice is geared towards starting and finishing that SF story of yours. He also gives some hints on how to distinguish between a good idea for a story and a bad idea. He does have some advice on publishing, but the main point is that if your story is not good SF it really is no point marketing it as SF.
