Book Description

16 Jun 2011
Writing and publishing journal articles are crucial to scientific careers. Unfortunately, many young scientists find the process of communicating scientific information effectively a complete mystery. By providing practical, readable, and sometimes humorous guidance, this book helps researchers gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in communicating about their work. This seventh edition of How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper contains 41 chapters focused upon two separate tasks: how to write the respective sections of a scientific paper and how to publish the paper. Other related topics include approaching a writing project, following ethical principles in scientific publishing, preparing oral presentations and poster presentations, writing grant proposals, and working with the popular media. The authors provide considerable guidance on appropriate scientific writing style as well as an extensive list of words and expressions to avoid-and supply the language to substitute for them.

How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper is a strongly recommended addition to any novice and aspiring person of science's personal library collection." - Midwest Book Review "Although one would not read this book from cover to cover, the sections are self-sustaining and can be read as a topic of interest may arise. it is very good, very well written if only my papers were on this level! I was also hoping for a little table of useful words/phrases which often people writing miss, but other than this it is fab!

5.0 out of 5 stars I require my freshman biology class to buy this book 19 Aug 2012
By Elizabeth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I had Dr. Gastel in a scientific writing course. It was the single most helpful course of my graduate career. Every person entering the sciences should be required to take a scientific writing course. Her book, like her course, changed my career for the better. I now teach freshman and sophomore science courses. In lab, I assign this book for my students to get used to reading/writing scientifically.

This book has concise, specific chapters. Gastel doesn't waste words. She (and Day) also tell you exactly what you need to know and why you need to know it.

I think this book should be mandatory for anyone entering the field of science.

This book is a real classic! The writing is clear and simple, and the humor makes for very light reading. This book explains clearly and easily all the sections of a scientific paper and offers tips that will aid in writing and publication. The new edition also deals with other types of scientific writing such as blogs, theses, book reviews, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book! 26 Nov 2012
By Noelle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love this book! I just finished writing my first manuscript and I used this to help me. Day and Gastel are slightly sarcastic, which makes reading this more enjoyable. Not only are there chapters on how to write different sections of a paper, but chapters on how to write to the public and the use/misuse of English.

This is overall a great book for anyone who is looking to hone their science writing or someone who is just beginning. Easy read and provides good examples. I bought it for my senior thesis course in college and it has helped me better understand my own writing process. Would recommend.
