Book Description

16 Feb 2004
It just takes one day for Seb's life to fall apart. He is in trouble with school for non-attendance, in trouble with his mother for far too many things to mention, and he has just been dumped by his girlfriend. So instead of trying to sort out any of these troubles, Seb takes off for the day, to central London, where things soon start to unravel. Seb awakes a few days later in a hospital bed, lucky to be alive after having got into a fight, and having been saved by an unknown character. But who is that person, and why did he step in to save Seb? Soon Seb is convinced that he has a guardian angel and he is determined to find out who he is. But searching for a guardian angel is no easy task! Wonderfully vivid and remarkably atmospheric, this is a novel for all young adults who want to read books with bite.

Review

'Marks's grip on reality is so good that the seraphic elements are swept along with total conviction' -- Sunday Telegraph

Like Seb’s own life, How it Works gets better and better as it goes along. This book has a soul’ -- Philip Ardagh, Guardian

‘A great blend of well-observed contemporary life and a little magic realism. Seb is an engaging and realistic character’ -- Observer

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it ! 23 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
Having read this book, I found it uplifting without being saccharine. It deals with the potentially off-putting concept of angels in a balanced and interesting way that will appeal particularly to teenage boys. The narrative is also well-paced and engaging.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very strong language from page one !! 1 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Bought this book for a 12-year old on the strength of a review in the children's section of the Guardian. Within the first three pages were most of the swear words I could think of I'm no prude but this was over the top. My son said the book was "OK but a bit rude".

I guess there is a huge difference between a 12 year old and a 15 year old. I would not recommend this book for anyone under about 14 or 15.
