Book Description

31 Jan 2013

There are some people you can’t imagine life without.

What, at the end of it all, is really important?

Liv and her friends can’t imagine a life different from now: freedom, lifelong friendships, and dreams that are still within their reach.

Then, Liv dies.

For those left behind – Mia, Fraser, Anna, Norm and Melody – everything stops. Their lives and dreams are frozen in time.

In the years that follow, they decide to meet on Liv’s birthday to raise a toast and celebrate her life, even though none of them are living their own – not really. Time marches inexorably on, and yet without Liv, the lynchpin of the group, they are all flailing. Mia and Fraser are quietly falling apart because of the secret they share and, as truths are unearthed and their friendships are tested to the limit, they have to ask themselves – is it time to get on with the business of actually living?

About the Author

Katy Regan worked at 19 magazine for two years before joining Marie Claire in 2002. In 2004, at the height of her career as the office roving reporter singleton, she fell accidentally pregnant by her best mate (who just remained a friend). Seeing the creative possibilities in this unconventional situation, her editor commissioned her to write a column, And then there were three… which proved so successful it ran for two years and inspired readers to write in to Katy with their life story. She has now taken her loyal following to her blog: The State She's In on the Marie Claire website. She lives in Little Berkhamsted and shares care of her son Fergus with his dad

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 24 Jan 2013
By Sarah Lambert TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a story about a group of friends who are struggling to deal with the unexpected death of Liv. They are all finding it hard to move on with their lives and to deal with their grief. Her boyfriend Fraser is trying to cope without her and to start a new relationship, but has he found the right woman. Mia is trying to cope as a single mum with young son Billy, should she get back together with Billy's father Eduardo? Melody and Norm who have always seemed the perfect couple are now facing cracks in their relationship. The last member of the group Anna is seeking spiritual comfort. As they all try to find ways to carry on without Liv to hold the group together they decide to complete a list she made of things she would like to do before she turned 30. As they try to complete the tasks and as Liv's 30th birthday draws closer they have to face up to things in their lives and to decide what is really important. This is a good read with some interesting characters and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me want to call a friend 24 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback
Grabbed this book at the airport following a recommendation in ASOS magazine. Could instantly relate to the characters and plot having been through a similarly traumatic situation with my group of friends in our post-college years. Having read the Q&A with Katy at the end of the book, I was surprised to hear that it had not been her experience that sparked the idea but a strong intrigue to explore these feelings. I found it to be very insightful of the types of emotions it can evoke with a good mix of light-hearted relief from the characters that made me laugh out loud at times. I spent the holiday glued to it and it made me want to be close my friends each time I put it down. Would wholeheartedly recommend.

I've read Katy Regan's other two books - which were great - and with How We Met I think she's really hit her stride. She even says that "this is the book about friendship that I've been trying to write for years". It's worth the wait. The characters are very sharply drawn, their relationships to each other ring very authentically, and the plot as it develops gives each of the five of them plenty of time and space to evolve.

This is a great read that properly encapsulates that sense of the change that all close friendships go through over time, whether just naturally, or - as in this case - because of an outside shock. It's something that happens to all of us.

Highly recommended. Enjoy.
