Product Description

BBC Review

Jeremy Warmsley's second album, is a more adventurous and self-assured follow-up to his 2006 debut, The Art of Fiction. Calling to mind the pop sensibilities of Patrick Wolf, Mystery Jets and Of Montreal, Warmsley makes music that is both instantly enjoyable and intelligently produced.

There is a maturity in the Divine Comedy-esque grand declarations of Sins (I Try) that belies the singer's relatively few years, with unusual structures and inventive arrangements proving the norm throughout the rest of the album as well. Opener Lose My Cool preceded this release as a download single and is a tremendous high point of the album. Warmsley's voice has a fantastic tone that when double-tracked suits his style of pop perfectly and brings it deep into Of Montreal or Shins territory. Turn Your Back is the type of foray into a classic songwriting style that Brendan Benson might make, while If He Breaks Your Heart delivers macho lines (''if he takes the piss, I will break his legs'') in the form of a poignant ballad. Warmsley insists, ''I will end him, I will end him'' and the result may be slightly comical, but it's also rather beautiful.

With every listen, another track on How We Became emerges as something special: revealing thoughtful lyrics and a production style that is both polished and intimate. Approached without expectation, Jeremy Warmsley surely triumphs. --Holly Barnes

Masterfully creative album 7 July 2009
By Jeremy Byrne - Published on Amazon.com
I found Jeremy Warmsley about 4 years ago when he had only two ep's available. Since then he has released The Art of Fiction, and How We Became. The art of fiction had, I would say 7, strong songs. How We Became is a much more focused and appealing representation of his creative ability to write an interesting, listenable and fun tune. I highly recommend HOw We Became. there are only 1 1/2 songs that I am not wowed by.
