Product Description

Product Description

This book shows covers both Microsoft Office Accounting Express and Professional Editions (2008) and is authored by one of the world's leading experts in mid-market accounting software. It has been written specifically for small business owners, entrepreneurs, their bookkeepers and advisors. It assumes no IT knowledge or deep accounting skills. It simply tells you how to get the MAXimum benefit out of Microsoft Office Accounting Unfortunately, most books about accounting packages add very little value. They tell you what buttons to press (repeating most of the Help text) but do not explain how to use the product to help you run your business. Neither do they tell you about all the extra practical things that you need to do around the system to provide adequate financial control, keep the taxman at bay and your accountant happy. It is written exclusively for the UK market addressing local VAT issues, HMRC likes/dislikes and of course UK English! Finally, it consolidates 25 years of experience working with mid-range businesses and includes scores of practical TIPS to show readers, amongst other thing; How to set up the system to keep overheads and staff to a minimum. How to tailor the system to their specific needs. How to use the system to win more customers and retain them Which products, services and customers are most profitable. How to protect and improve cash flow. Which reports to produce, when and how to use them to run a business more profitably. How to develop good habits early, ready for the challenges of growth and success.

4.0 out of 5 stars Content is good but missing some vital information, 5 Feb 2009
By J. Granger (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Gary Simon's book comprehensively covers all the major functions of Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 in its 313 pages. The book is also packed with practical tips and suggestions of which reports are essential to print off at the end of each month.

My only disappointment was the lack of information on how to handle directors' salaries and dividend payments, which the software itself does badly, so this is an area where some clear instructions would have been welcomed, and infact was one of my main reasons for buying the book in the first place.

By virtue of the fact that the software is free, many of its users will be small businesses or one man bands desperately trying to get to grips with handling their accounts. This book will certainly help them to understand the basics but won't handle all the questions they will have.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, an accounting software guide that anyone can understand!!, 21 Feb 2009
By Mr. D. Fabian (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm not an accountant and nor am I a software specialist. I run a small company with 5 staff and was attracted to the book because I thought it would tell me how to use MOA without blinding me with science. I was pleasantly surprised by Gary Simon's book which was very clearly written and covered all the basics I needed to get up and running plus giving me loads of tips about how to organise myself around the package. It describes everything in terms that a layperson can follow and gave me the confidence to set up my system without any outside help - which has paid for the book many time over! It is well organised and I expect that most small businesses will get a lot of value out of it by selecting the bits that are useful to them. The section on reporting was very good as I had no idea what reports to produce and when. There is very little help for this product in the UK and all the other books I have seen are written for the US market which is useless if you want to know about VAT or are not used to American terminology. I think this is a good starter book and well worth the money if you don't want to spend hundreds of pound on an accountant.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good guide to running a small business with Microsoft Office Accounting, 26 Feb 2009
By Dr. H. Cohen (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

I started a small consultancy business after many years working in much larger organisations where all the accounting was done for me. I couldn't find anything to help me with Microsoft Office Accounting until I stumbled across this book. I have to say that I found Gary Simon's book to be a very clear and easy to read complement to the Microsoft Office Accounting package. It not only helped me use the software but provided sensible advice about business set up and financial controls and made me think about all the things I needed to do around the system to keep the business moving smoothly and ensure I was keeping adequate records. I particularly liked the sections which showed me how to tailor customer screen designs and documents to fit my needs. I would recommend this book to anyone running a small business who needs to know a bit more than just what buttons to press.
