Review

'exuberantly illustrated ... laugh out-loud books, they will convert even the most relcutant reader to take their first dip.'

(Julia Golding, TES )

'a hilarious and gripping adventure, beautifully paced and studded with great dramatic scenes.'

(Amanda Craig, Times )

'Cowell writes laugh-out-loud books with plenty of boy appeal ... Cowell's anarchic drawings suit the slapstick humour.'

(The Herald )

'Fiercely exciting and laugh-aloud funny, it is as full of joy for children of 7+ who have given up reading as for those who love it.'

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

Irresistably funny, exciting and endearing

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE WEEK: This book is great fun and has a Blackadderish sense of humour ... full of the sort of jokes that will make schoolboys snigger. (Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times )

How to Train Your Dragon is a delightful narrative caper... It offers a challenging read to 11-year-olds, and rewards reading aloud, especially for those who relish an element of theatre at story time. (Sunday Herald, Glasgow )

... raucous and slapstick ... liberally illustrated with [Cressida Cowell's] riotous drawings, notes and maps. (The Financial Times )

[Cressida Cowell] puts a contemporary spin on the old brains over brawn moral and brings the story to a climax with a thrilling dragon duel. Lots for lots of different readers to enjoy. (Books for Keeps )

Bulging with good jokes, funny drawings and dramatic scenes, it is absolutely wonderful. (Independent on Sunday )

'funny, outrageous and will lure in the most reluctant reader.'

(The Spectator )

'If you haven't discovered Hiccup yet, you're missing out on one of the greatest inventions of modern children's literature.'

(Julia Eccleshare, Guardian children's editor )

Product Description

THE STORY CONTINUES in the fifth volume of Hiccup's How to Train Your Dragon memoirs ...

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. But it wasn't always like that. Hiccup's memoirs look back to when Hiccup was just an ordinary boy, and finding it very hard to be a Hero. Someone has stolen the Fire Egg. Now the Volcano on Volcano Island is active and the tremors are hatching the eggs of the Exterminator dragons! Can Hiccup return the Fire Egg to the Volcano, stop the Volcano from erupting, AND save the Tribes from being wiped out by the terrible sword-claws of the Exterminators?

How to Train Your Dragon is a DreamWorks film starring Gerrard Butler, America Ferrera and Jonah Hill, out on DVD in October 2010 adapted from the best selling How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell.

Read the rest of Hiccup's exploits in the How to Train Your Dragon series in How to Train Your Dragon, How to Be a Pirate, How to Speak Dragonese, How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse, A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons, How to Ride a Dragon's Storm, and How to Break a Dragon's Heart.

Not only is this series of books one of the most loved in our household - by my three boys as well as my husband and I; it has one of the best readers too so we can listen to it in the car as well as bed time stories. On long trips in the car it has all of us entralled and the boys are quiet for hours. You will not regret buying these Cd's - David Tennent is superb. If you have not read any of the other books in the series I would recommend that you start from the beginning with 'How to be a Pirate'. Although they are stand alone stories you get a better feel for the characters if you know the history.

My ten-year old son loves the books. I've read a couple and find them well-written and amusing. The stories are fast-paced, exciting and have lots of cliff-hangers. The central character is Hiccup, an unlikely boy hero who owns a dragon called Toothless. Toothless is even more of an unlikely hero but somehow the two of them, through a combination of brains and luck, always triumph.

If you have a child who is between 4 and 10 who you are reading to this (and all the Hiccup books) is a must. Especially if you are bored senseless reading the rest of the inane drivel that is out there.

The Hiccup series is clever, amusing, engrossing and delightful. I'm currently reading through it for a second time with my 7 year old and enjoying it almost as much as the first time around. He also loves it, btw!

Read them in sequence though as the story does progress. That said they are all good stand-alone books.
