Product Description

So you have cancer and want to survive? You need to make sure you get the best treatment possible. But most healthcare systems – whether public or private – are run by doctors for doctors. Very few of them are willing to treat patients as customers.

If you know which buttons to press however, and how to play the system to your own advantage, you will get the best care available.

‘How to Beat Cancer' is a new type of health book designed for the 21st century. Written by Karol Sikora, one of the world’s leading cancer specialists, it is a sharp, incisive guide to how you can play the system so that it works for you.

Easy-to-read and accessible, it will ensure that everyone is empowered with the same information as the experts – and have the insider knowledge to make sure they get the best treatment from their physician and the health system.

Karol Sikora is Medical Director of Cancer Partners UK, an independent sector organisation creating the largest UK cancer network as a series of joint ventures with Britain’s NHS. Sikora is Professor of Cancer Medicine and honorary Consultant Oncologist at Hammersmith Hospital, London, where he continues to run an NHS clinic. He was seconded to be Director of the WHO Cancer Programme for two years. He additionally chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of Source Bioscience PLC, Britain’s leading cancer diagnostic company. Sikora has also been appointed Dean at the University of Buckingham, Britain’s first independent Medical School. He has taken part in many TV and radio programmes and written widely in the press on cancer topics. Sikhora has written over 300 papers and edited or jointly written over 20 books including Treatment of Cancer, Britain’s leading postgraduate textbook, now going to its 6th edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Various and Fresh Approaches 10 April 2012
By Gareth
How to Beat Cancer is a wake-up call to cancer sufferers and their nearest and dearest. By sharing a few home truths about the pharmaceutical industry and the political factors influencing cancer care, the author encourages patients to get involved in decisions affecting their own treatment. This book is really about taking control and knowing the system, something he clearly has years of experience in. He also takes a refreshing approach compared to most doctors - he considers a variety of angles on the disease from emotional to psychological to biochemical to political and sadly, financial. An extensive appendix of vetted websites with a short description from the author also adds value. Definitely worth a read, should you be suffering from cancer or have a friend or family member in need of care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering and honest. 9 April 2012
By Rachel
Karol Sikora commands a certain amount of trust and respect, being as he is, one of the world's foremost authorities on modern cancer care. Given this, his book, filled with personal recommendations on how to get the best care possible, seems indispensable to anyone dealing with a diagnosis or even to a friend or relative. A wealth of experience gleaned from years of working in the field leads him to consider a multidisciplinary and human approach to treatment and life post-diagnosis. He is, first and foremost, an oncologist and as such he tends to present his ideas in a fairly objective and factual fashion but his years on the front-line of cancer care mean that he is more aware than most of the emotional and psychological effects of the condition. Honest and straight-talking, Sikora urges the reader to take control of their own care and to be informed at every step.
