Book Description

How 25 global giants started

Product Description

Lots of us have ideas we think would make great businesses. Most of us never do anything with those ideas. But for those that do, a world of opportunity awaits them. This book is about 21 people who acted on their idea, made the first steps to start their business and subsequently went on to turn it into a global brand. From Adidas and Apple to Sony and Swatch, we reveal how some of the world’s biggest international businesses got of the ground, and those very first steps taken by their founders. How soon after they started did they venture overseas? Following on from the hugely successful How They Started, this next volume How They Started: Global Brands Edition takes the question one step further and asks ‘How do you turn an idea in to a global business?’

How They Started: Global Brands is disappointing.

The writing style and research level are on a par with a set of weak formulaic pre-university essays. The proofreaders failed to perform basic checks of grammar.

As per a standard essay there are a small number of quotes from people involved with the companies. These quotes are referenced and appear be predominantly from the public domain. Unfortunately there seems to be little original content. Much of the content for each company could be found on Wikipedia with very little effort.

It promises to tell "secrets to each brand's success" and essentially delivers "They were successful because they succeeded".

I've got the original 'How They Started' and this is the global edition of that book, giving fascinating insights into how such well known brands as Adidas, Sony, Ikea and Pizza Hut started out. Interesting look into where these brands, who seem so ubiquitious today, had their origins and how their fortunes were by no means secure in the very beginning.

Some of the businesses seemed more well researched than others, latter areas of the book that focussed on internet type brands were more sketchy and I was left feeling not very certain even of how they had begun / how they had developed etc. I do not think the book is meant to help you set up a brand, it is a book of snippets of information which are mostly interesting but, with the exception of the more traditional businesses that took you on the journey from start to finish it was a little disappointing as they too briefly / poorly described internet based brands.

Useful, but lacks real depth
Great as a "starter for 10" for looking at a number of the big, well-known global brands. However. If you are a student looking for depth case study material beware that this... Read more

Superficial
I was hoping to get a lot of insight from this book but really it is so lightweight and superficial that you could learn more simply by reading the newspapers! Read more

How did these businesses start?
I was skeptical when the book arrived in the post, but it covered a few businesses I had bought from and was indeed curious about how they really worked and where they came from. Read more
