Book Description

1 Jun 2012
Modern manners leave a lot to be desired. In 'How The Queen Can Make You Happy' Mary Killen, etiquette expert, mixes wit and polemic to make the case for civilised conduct - based on the ultimate role model, HM the Queen. In the year of her diamond jubilee, Mary argues that the Queen represents the best of British behaviour - which is why she is held in such high esteem around the world. Now you can use examples from her own life to navigate life s social complexities with ease and good grace. Entries include: How to manage difficult pets; How to deal with bores; How to address an insult; How to dress properly ...and many more. Examining such under-rated virtues as discretion, politeness and kindness, 'How The Queen Can Make You Happy' is a humorous celebration of long-held British values in an age where discretion is not generally the better part of value. Never mind the curtsey, where's the courtesy?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Jubilee books 1 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover
A brilliantly conceived and wonderfully stylish and witty cross between Queen appreciation, philosophy and self help. In a series of snappy chapters - Compartmentalising, Concentration, Continuity, Digestion, Dignity, Dogs etc - Mary Killen presents an entirely new way of looking at our Queen and shows how following her shining example in all sorts of ways can help make you happy. It deserves to become an international bestseller and the world will be a far better place if it does.

5.0 out of 5 stars A light bulb moment on every page 3 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover
Spectator agony aunt and all-round wit Mary Killen has excelled herself this time. Using the Queen's astonishing longevity, health, consistency of action and varied life experience as a guide, she has produced the happiness psychology book for those who don't read that kind of thing. From sitting up straight being essential for digestive health to compartmentalising to stop feelings overwhelming you and altering the appropriateness of your behaviour, it's all here. Do buy it and read it and follow its guidance - you will feel much better afterwards. It is also delightfully written, rich with interesting facts (including scientific), succinct - which means you can swallow this dose of joy in one sitting - and without a single instance of waffle. Our Queen sets us all a good example, just as she should - but would never dream of pointing this out herself. Now Killen has done it for her.

Mary Killen's wry and witty "Dear Mary" etiquette and social agony column in The Spectator is the funniest and one of the most-read pages of the magazine, and no wonder. Her sharp observations and guidance on the social mores of today place her well above other less talented aunts. Now, her new book "How the Queen can Make you Happy" is a perfect present for anyone who needs reminding of the best way to achieve happiness - through service to others. Mary reveals how The Queen's simple approach to life - exercising restraint, fortitude and good grace - and her sense of duty, kindness and discretion - is an example to us all and a beacon for those who would attract the respect in which Her Majesty is held. And besides, as with everything Mary writes, it's weepingly funny.
