Product Description

Product Description

Learning a language and being able to speak it do not go hand in hand. This book provides both structured activities to get students speaking and ideas for developing confidence in using English outside the classroom. Essentially, this book:

  • examines the different approaches and activities that can be used for teaching and testing speaking.
  • covers areas of speech such as articulation, fluency and register.
  • looks at classroom approaches such as drilling, discussions, drama, dialogues and conversation.

I am a young teacher in my second year of teaching using this book for self study.

The first three chapters a reasonbly academic introduction to the skill of speaking in a foreign language, the latter chapters talk about ways to use this knowledge to design and run classroom activities that will enable the necessary skills. The balance is is probably 60% academic, 40% practical classroom suggestions.

In my opinion, the book is probably not suited to two types of people. Firstly, I don't think it would be the right for teachers who are pre-CELTA (or other qualifications/experience) who are looking for an introductory-level text. It is simply too in depth and academic - plus without classroom experience and without the opportunity to instantly start implemting the ideas in the book, I think much of it would simpy be too abstract. Secondly, it isn't that suitable for people who are only looking for a book full of practical classroom ideas, especiually ready-to-use classroom ideas, because even the practical suggections are general types of activities rather than specific, pre-made activities.

However, if you are trying to develop as a language teacher and move to a more informed approach then this is certainly a very, very good book. I found that it helped me understand the reasoning behind many of the activities in text books and to make my own activities in a far more informed and reasoned way. I feel more confident teaching speaking now and have tried a number of new activities in class which have worked extremely well. The chapter on testing speaking has prepared me for the oral assessments that I have to do next month and I will feel much more confident doing these now. I also enjoyed learning about how people learn to speak, and answering some interesting questions about speaking (such as, 'how can sports commentators talk so fast?', 'what is fluency?', 'is grammar important for speaking' and 'how do written and spoken grammar differ?'). The academic parts of the book do include a lot of jargon, but none of this is assumed and it explains all the terms very clearly, so little background knowledge is necessary. Sometimes, I felt that the book was aimed slightly more at people studying an MA or DELTA, basically for people who need to know all the jargon for exams. But I didn''t find this too interfering.

I feel this book, overall, improved my oral English lessons and I would highly reccomend it to anyone who is trying to improve thier teaching.

A Great Resource 3 Sep 2010

This book written by Thornbury has introduced many ideas and theory. It suggests the best method to teach, or encourage, speaking in the classroom. If you would like to learn more about natural speaking in the classroom or you are doing the DELTA, get this book. It is invaluable.
