This book is well worth the money. It is very clearly written and is an enjoyable and informative read. The chapters are broken down into vowels, consonants, intonation which keeps it in manageable chunks. What is more, there are plenty of classroom activities suggested in this book for the trainee teacher to go on. The accompanying CD is useful to play in the classroom for students to get their tongues around the phonetics. As I have a Scottish accent, it is difficult for me to hear the difference between 'fool' and 'full' but the students need to know this. Overall, very good.

I bought this when I first learned to teach and found it invaluable, particularly the detail regarding the difficulties different nationalities have with specific areas of pronunciation. I lost it recently and have realised that it's hard to manage without - it's arranged so sensibly and is so accessible and useful for all levels of learner. Pronunciation is something so many students want to master and yet it's the poor relation of TESOL - this book helps to give the teacher confidence in teaching this often-neglected area. An important addition to your resource library.

Awesome Resource for Pronunciation Blues 15 May 2007
By Bu-Chan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Like most books in the "How to.." series, such as How to Teach Grammar (How To...), "How to Teach Pronunciation" by Gerald Kelly is an awesome book for teachers in need of some advice and input on the area of pronunciation.

The book has a variety of chapters on different aspects. It begins with the basics, (vowel and consonant sounds), and builds up to intonation and connected speech. There are excellent chapters on stress, sentence stress and more. Every chapter has sample lessons that illustrate some great ideas for teaching. They are all very adaptable.

The book has some excellent theoretical aspects, giving rules for connected speech and the like, for example. The theory is very clear, gives you a good run down on the terminology and keeps it all very real. The book really was written for the working teacher.

Choosing this one or Sound Foundations (Teacher Development) is a tough call. I would tend to go with both, as they have both got some serious advantages over each other.

Either way, I found this book an excellent source of new direction, new clarity and new focus on the ever present pronunciation blues. Totally recommended!

Good Guide to Pronunciation 27 Aug 2011
By Leonard Mayer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The games shown in the book are rather difficult for beginners to say the least. It also has some errors. It is also difficult to discern the difference between italicized 'h' and 'b'; I had to look at the words like 'had' and 'bad' with a magnifying glass. One thing that is difficult is to verify the phonemic transcription. I did find a web site that provides some guide although there were mistakes there also. The book has a few mistakes. The book does not explain why students should even learn the phonemic alphabet. Most of the games in the book are too difficult for absolute beginners. I teach absolute beginners in Chinatown and have experience with teaching pronunciation to this level of English as a Second Language learners. It provides a good beginning if supplemented with other books. This book is for teachers who want to gain an understanding of phonetics so they can try to design simple minded lessons for Second Language learners involving pronunciation. It is a good book to train TESOL teachers with fundamentals of pronunciation. As a TESOL teacher, I have acquired other resources to supplement this text on pronunciation. But I do recommend it for TESOL trainers. It is also too short for the price paid.
