Synopsis

Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish examine the inevitable stresses faced by parents of teenagers. Through role play and discussion, they show how to keep communication open with rebellious offspring, how to let go gracefully and yet retain respect and some degree of co-operation throughout these difficult years.

As I ran from the parking lot to the school entrance, I held on tightly to my blowing umbrella and wondered why anyone would leave a warm home on such a cold, miserable night to come to a workshop on teenagers. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading 1 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This was easy to read and at times seemed to be stating the obvious, but the techniques suggested, for talking to your teen, were very subtle - and actually worked!! I think the basic idea is 'treat others as you would like to be treated yourself' and it seems that parents aren't particularly good at this when it comes to their teenage children. The examples were maybe a bit unrealistic but the idea of talking to your teen in such a way, that they realize for themselves why their behavior is unacceptable, is actually very good - it encourages the teen to think for themselves and take responsibility for their behavior. More importantly, as your teen sees that you are listening to them and not just dismissing their opinions etc, they really do open up you. Whether or not your teenage child is difficult to live with, or not, this is worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on teens I have yet met 2 Jun 2009
By Tess N
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had found the "How to talk so kids..." book by the same authors helpful, so thought I would give this one a try. It is really readable, and has lots of useful ideas in it. I like the combination of text and cartoons, as it seem to make it more memorable. I read it straight through in one sitting as soon as it arrived. Then I lent it to a friend who has already read it twice and now bought her own copy! So that means I can re-read mine, which I plan to do. It is so helpful to have a fresh point of view to get one out of the old dysfunctional patterns of communication (or not as the case may be!) with one's children - and also with other adults. I definitely recommend this book. (by Tess N)

4.0 out of 5 stars Sound advice 27 Feb 2010
By Jools07
Format:Paperback
I bought this book because I found the authors' "how to talk so kids will listen..." helpful.

This one is written in the same format but is much shorter and lighter weight, with more focus on practical strategies, and less theorising. It is written as an account of some workshops run by the author with a group of parents (and later introducing their teens). I personally find the writing style almost unbearably cringey at times, with superfluous details about which room the group was going to meet in, and who chipped into the conversation etc; the authors explain at the beginning that the book is an amalgamation of their work, and I find the imaginary settings distracting! However, as other reviewers have said, the cartoons do help by breaking up the text, and giving easily memorable illustrations of each point. The summary at the end of each chapter is useful for reference too.

The ideas that the authors promote in this book are so well grounded and relevant that I have no hesitation in recommending it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book 23 Dec 2011
By gaia
Format:Paperback
I bought this when in a fairly sceptical frame of mind thinking there was no quick fix to better understanding what made my teenager tick. I read it and I tried doing what it suggested. Absolutely amazing! It gave me a much better understanding of what I had been doing and what effect it had. How many of us as loving parents respond to a beautiful daughter's lament 'I'm fat and ugly' with 'Don't be silly of course you are not!'? If this sounds like you, buy it!

This book should be made compulsory for every teacher in training and mailed to every parent. It is worth its weight in gold. Check out the other titles which are equally as good.

3.0 out of 5 stars How to stop you going mad 23 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
This book was suggested to me by the school nurse. My teenage son is not only driving me crazy at home but is also getting into hot water at school. The book has some helpful tips and it is really easy to read. There are cartoon strips that act out typical scenarios and make an easy reference point. I haven't finished the book yet but I have seen some good results with what I've learnt so far. Any advice on how to deal with difficult moments with a teenager is good advice in my book.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR TEENS TOO 1 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Best thing about this book is I have caught my teen reading it a couple of times ... well, the cartoons anyway! It has certainly helped to get discussions started and I think my son appreciates we are trying to communicate with him.

Well although I haven't finished the book, it certainly has given me a wider view on my soon to be teen. It does what it says on the tin and offers some comedy. A good buy.
