Formulaic and long-winded, 14 Oct 2002

I feel that there are much better books out there which will teach you to become better at dating (and at relationships, for that matter) than this one. It certainly seems to me that the authors are operating in a world very much different from the one I live in (and they do, I live in Europe, they in the US). Their advice - which they revisit many times - that the single most important issue to address when initiating contact with a woman is her fear that you're going to rape or kill her seem so far-fetched and foreign to me (if it doesn't to you, then maybe this book _is_ for you).
Also, this book touts the virtues of the proverbial "numbers game" theory, ie. that you just have to try it on with enough different women, and eventually someone will bite (so, again, if this line of argumentation appeals to you, go ahead and buy the book).
A certain kind of "rule of threes" seems to steep this work. "You should call her three times max", "you should do this or that on the third date" or whatever.
Also, the authors have themselves adhered strictly to a certain formula throughout the book.
1) They introduce a fairly obvious concept
2) They provide a detailed example of what happens if you violate this concept
3) They provide a detailed example of how to adhere to this concept
In the end it takes a full predictable page instead of two or three interesting paragraphs to arrive at the point.
Ultimately this book leaves me as cold as I suspect any prospective date unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of the "techniques" in it would be.

Bound to work but ugly in every way, 20 Jan 2002

This review is from: How to Succeed with Women (Mass Market Paperback)
The book no doubt lives up to its title. I can recommend it if you fall in any of the two following categories:
1) You are like me someone who reads *all* the manuals when he's stuck and/or want a competely different angle after reading 'How to make anyone fall in love with you' by Leil Lowndes.
2) You are a manipulative b*****d.
Two other points:
* It is highly geared to the USA; much of it is useless in Europe.
* It's style is awful.

This review is from: How to Succeed with Women (Mass Market Paperback)
This enourmous compilation of common sense dos and don'ts provides a useful basis for analysing your success (or lack of) with woman. It'll be enourmously useful in changing your image to something more attractive but don't expect it to make YOU more attractive. It doesn't, however, offer to give its readers depth of personality so I guess that's OK.
Well written, clear and insightful, I'd say this book is a basic requirement for any guy trying to clean up his act with women.
