This book distills wide-ranging topics on the 'financial market' into a succinctly bare-bones outline, which is rather easy to follow. Admittedly, the stock market is one part of the financial market, so it might be wrong to assert that such as the chapters titled 'Bank', 'Lloyd's of London', 'Overseas Investment', 'Other Investment', and 'Tax' have nothing at all to do with the 'stock market'. However, my first impression about the book from its title is that it should be a book mainly dealing with the stock market. Much to my surprise, I have acquired a general picture of how the UK 'financial market' works after reading this book, but ended up at a loss about 'How the Stock Market Really Works'.

After reading the 2nd edition I found this book the most straightforward explanations of a topic that confuses the best of us. How many people do you need to ask on the topic of the stock market before you get a clear picture. Ask no more! It explains all the fine detail without clouding the issue and even explains the illegal side so that you are aware of those cowboys!

Before I read this book I was pretty baffled by the stock market. Now, I feel I have more of a grasp of the ins and outs of how it all works. The terminology is clearly explained and there's even a glossary at the back to help. It's a prudent, focussed account for the beginner investor. Well worth a read (although the heading on the back page made me squirm a little). 'This is a book for people who want to make money'... in large font.
