Book Description

23 July 2009 For Entrepreneurs

More than 300,000 people start a business every year. That number will rise over the next year or two if the current economic downturn leads to widespread job losses.  It is a fact that many people choose to turn the threat of redundancy into the opportunity of self employment.

It is also a fact that when economic growth is low, business failure rates are higher. There has never been a greater need for a simple, explicit, practical business start-up guide that can increase new business survival rates in tough, as well as good times. People today need a start up guide that holds nothing back and tells them all they need to know. How to Start Your Own Business for Entrepreneurs does exactly this.

Of course for many, starting their own business is a lifestyle decision.  It is an aspect of the growing trend away from full time employment to freelance or portfolio working.  The boundaries between traditional employment and free enterprise are becoming increasingly blurred. How to Start Your Own Business for Entrepreneurs guides you as you pick your way through the no man's land that separates these two worlds.

More About the Author

I describe myself as a social entrepreneur, author and campaigner. I passionately believe that social entrepreneurship is as much an attitude as a skill. It can liberate, empower individuals, organisations and communities, enabling them to deliver sustainable profound social change.

My 17th book, 'Sales for non-Salespeople' will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in August 2014. It will help you sell yourself, your ideas, products & services. These days we all have to sell to succeed, but it needs to be done with subtlety!

I've developed a one day sales course based on both the book. I'll be running these across the UK, both in-house for organisations and as open programmes; full details on my website www.robertashton.co.uk .

Perhaps like you, I learn by doing. I enjoy working with others to solve their enterprise conundrums. Recently I've helped a school raise £10m for a new campus, created an urban Development Trust and helped a Town Council with the asset transfer.

I've also launched my own social business, Swarm Apprenticeships, which blends an enterprise qualification and business support to connect 'bright NEET' youngsters with small business owners.

People say I'm different, although from my side of the beard that's hard to judge. Hazel Blears MP described me as 'human WD40'. She liked the way I get into the gaps between organisations. A Housing Association CEO said I was like a hand grenade. 'You pay the fee, pull the pin and wait for the bang,' he said. 'I'm never sure where or when the explosion will be, but it's always positive.'

I've signed up as a Growth Accelerator business coach. This subsidises me to work with charities, social and community enterprises. I'm using this to widen my horizons too, so not clock watching.

Finally, I rather enjoy challenging conference audiences as keynote speaker or event chairman. As you can imagine I have plenty of stories to share, but more importantly take the trouble to research the event and never, ever just deliver the same old carefully rehearsed speech!

I hope you enjoy reading my books. Do let me know what you think and do feel free to email me any questions. You are my reader, my audience and the person I'm writing for. I welcome your feedback!

I have read a number of books in preparation for starting my own business, from a wide variety of authors. A common problem that I found is that a lot of the books overlapped and were lacklustre in their presentation of topics.

Robert Ashton's book is something I don't want to put down, it combines useful advice that I have put to actual use in starting my business, with insightful case studies detailing how others have achieved success before.

A measure of a business book for me is how you can apply what's in the book to real life starting a business, and for me, that is where this book conquers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for getting it right second time around 26 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
In a world full of waffle within books it was refreshing to read a book that cuts through the flowery bits and just provides useful bite-sized pieces of information about all the issues involved in starting and running a business.

Having been in business for several years, I stumbled across the book by accident (a contact had bought it) and didn't think it was applicable to me. However, after a quick read through I picked up on one useful tip and then two more, and decided it worth buying. What I found particularly interesting was reading through the process of starting a business in the right way and it made me realise that I'd made many mistakes first time round that could have been avoided if this book had been around all those years ago. Taking that information, I can apply it to a new business venture I'm creating and THIS time I feel confident that those same mistakes won't happen and the new business will evolve at a much better pace than my original business did.

There are a lot of 'business' books around nowadays but if you're the type of person who just likes to cut to the meat of what the book is saying (i.e. useful tips and advice), then this book will let you save the important time for implementing the actions that the book recommends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing read 18 May 2010
Format:Paperback
A great read that you can dip in and out of as and when you need to. The case studies help make this book real and allow you to easily apply the lessons learned to your own business. Great to read a book that eliminates the waffle and cuts to the important bits, wish I had read this years ago, might have avoided a few of the more obvious pitfalls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable advice for entrepreneurs 29 July 2009
Format:Paperback
How To Start Your Own Business is the new (August 2009) book from Robert Ashton, an experienced entrepreneur who already has eight successful books under his belt.

The 26 chapters are divided into five logical sections, as follows:

* Before you start
* Planning to succeed
* Finding customers
* Managing your business
* Looking ahead

If you are just starting to think about setting up your own business, then reading the book from cover to cover will provide you with a wealth of invaluable advice and guidance. It acts as an excellent systematic guide and does exactly what it says on the cover, which is to show you "step by step how to master the entire process of launching your business", while providing you with "an extensive start-up toolkit and invaluable advice from someone who's been there, done it and made the mistakes - so you don't have to".

But equally, the well written chapters are easy to dip into to find information that is pertinent at a particular time. For example, I turned first to the chapter on developing your brand and image, since that is the current focus of my own business. There is excellent advice here on matching your brand to your customer, using a graphic designer and writing a design brief. I then turned to an earlier chapter on finding your biggest business opportunity since I am currently working with a client who is considering whether to set up on her own, and has yet to decide what business would best suit her. In this chapter I found some really useful, practical exercises that will enable anyone to identify a profitable business opportunity that exploits their existing skills and passions.
