About the Author

Doug Richard is a UK based Californian serial entrepreneur and angel investor. Richard came to public prominence as a result of the BBC TV programme Dragons’ Den, where he appeared as a ‘dragon’, or investor in the first two series. He subsequently became known for the Richard Report, the Entrepreneur’s Manifesto and several other initiatives directed at improving UK support for startups and small businesses.
He is regularly invited to appear on business initiatives and economic development pieces with some frequency on the BBC and financial news networks. Doug has received a host of honours and awards during his career and was the first American to receive The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion. Amongst others, he became a fellow of the RSA and received an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Essex for his contribution to entrepreneurship education.
In 2008 Doug started School for Startups through which he has educated nearly 20,000 startups on the skills required to be successful. In 2010 Doug started School for Creative Startups with the sole remit of teaching creative people how to turn their creative hobbies into sustainable lifestyle businesses.

More About the Author

Doug Richard is an England-based Californian entrepreneur and specialist in technology transfer, commercialisation, and business incubation.

He came to prominence as a result of the BBC programme Dragons' Den, where he appeared as a 'dragon', or investor in the first two series. Although he made 2 investments during the first series, he did not make any investments in the 2nd series, and thereafter stepped down to advise the investment of funds on behalf of Tudor Investments, a US based hedge fund that began investing in early stage high technology startups. He remains the only Dragon not to invest throughout a series.

He founded and sold two companies: Visual Software and ITAL Computers. Between 1996 and 2000 Doug was President and CEO of Micrografx, a US publicly quoted software company.

In 2001 he moved to Cambridge, UK and co-founded the investment society, The Cambridge Angels, along with his friend Robert Sansom, the founder of FORE Systems.

In May 2006, he received an honorary Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion[2] - the only honorary awardee that year[3] - for his work promoting, developing and helping entrepreneurs.[4] as director and co-founder, Library House in Cambridge.

In 2008 he founded the School for Startups, an enterprise focussed on teaching entrepreneurship across the UK in partnership with leading UK Universities, the Royal Institution and the British Library.

In May 2008 Richard published his investigation into the British government's support of small businesses.[5] The Richard Report was written at the behest of the Conservative Party, though Richard emphasised the work was politically neutral.

In 2010 Richard received the Enterprise Educator of the year award from the National Council on Graduate Employment for his work through School for Startups with UK Universities and an honorary Doctorate from the University of Essex for his contribution to enterprise education.

In 2012 Richard undertook an independent review of the national apprenticeship system culminating in the publication of the Richard Review of Apprenticeships. Richard and his review were mentioned in the 2012 Budget when the Chancellor expressed his unreserved support for the Review.

In 2013 Richard published his first book, How to Start a Creative Business. that focuses on how creative people can start and grow their own successful businesses.

How to Start a Creative Business is essential for anyone wanting to set up a business in the creative field. Frankly, whatever business you're about to set up, you would find this book very helpful. Doug Richard explains in clear, easy-to-read steps how to do it and make a profit. It's nicely laid-out in chunks with lots of recaps to make sure you've really got it! It also sets out the boring stuff (cash-flow forecasts etc) in a way that doesn't put you off. Having run a creative business myself I really wish I had had this book before I started. I would certainly have made a lot more money than I did and had a lot less heartache. These are tough times in which to set up a business, particularly a creative one so give yourself all the help you can manage - read it!

I've recently started setting up my own creative business and stumbled across this book. I found it extremely useful, asking exactly the right questions (most of which I hadn't even considered myself), and leading me effortlessly down the path to a complete understanding of exactly what I needed to do to succeed.

I found the book immersive and rigorously straightforward. Unlike other business books I have previously read, Richard grounds his advice in simple to follow, concise real world examples from highly familiar companies.

Finally a business book that might actually be the catalyst for real businesses!

After recently completing Dougs 2012/13 School for Creative Startups course I was so excited to learn about his book. Although the course covered everything and more, having 'How to Start a Creative Business' would have been an invaluable tool to compliment the course. After jamming my copy of the book with notes taken during the course it is now my Bible.

Well laid out and full of useful advice this is the ideal tool to compliment any budding entrepreneur looking to start their own business, this book is the kickstart you'll need. Most valuable are Dougs 10 Questions, by working through each one you'll be able refine and define your business. This is the perfect book for anyone with a creative idea or business, whether you're just at the ideas stage or in the early development of you creative business. Written in the same manner and voice that Doug teaches, it's easy to understand, straight-forward and no nonsense.

As someone starting a craft business (and finding it all a bit frustrating)I exhaled as soon as I started flicking through this. Recommended by a friend who's actually taken a course with Doug Richard - and thinks he's brilliant - I had high hopes. Thankfully I can report this book is currently living up to expectation. It's clearly and engagedly laid out (really has been designed with the creative person in mind!) The advice is clear, makes sense and is inspiring. I'm working through it chapter by chapter and so far I've found it both challenging and encouraging. It's a little like having a business coach who combines tough love with cheerleading! The best thing for me is that, as a crafter I've read many 'how to start a craft business' books. They tend to concentrate on the 'kitchen table' type business. This book is far more ambitious for you which is exciting. Highly recommended.

I came across this title whilst on Doug's website looking for a business planning template. Before purchasing I read as many reviews as I could both for and against. I knew that the book would help me cut my way through my creative business. My high rating for this book reflects the impact it has had on my understanding of my position to my work and the bigger picture. I've found that you can not expect to cut through this book in one sitting, personally it has taken time for me to assimilate the information and apply it until something clicks and I get my Ah-ha moment which then allows me to push on through to the next chapter.

I like the straight talking layout of the content, and the real life often very familiar brands used as examples are very useful. This book is for anyone in a creative business especially a maker of things, to cut through the noise and use the practical advice as a guide for how to go from good to great. I would be lost without this book it has confirmed things I already knew, like the importance of your story, and highlighted many facts I totally overlooked. I wish I had known about it much sooner. Doug Richard gives you the authority to take action in your business.

I am finding this book enormously supportive. It is illustrated with peoples business stories, which brings the teaching to life. I fold down the corner of the page, when there is some advice that I want to implement into my own creative business and now that corner of the book is twice as thick.
Very helpful and I recommend it unreservedly.
