Some would cry sacrilege, fans of modern rock may hail this album as a triumph. To be honest, I'm indifferent. this album offers some new and interesting variations on classic smiths tracks, although none of them come close to the originals. Walter Walter's cover of Ask and The Beautiful Mistakes's cover of cemetry gates are superb, apart from when 'Ere thrice the sun done salutation to the dawn' comes out as "Err duhhh salutation to the dawn" :P
There are better covers available for most of these tracks, Big Mouth, which is covered by Read Yellow turns my stomach, whereas Placebo covered the same song on a different covers album called 'The Smiths is Dead' which I prefer to the original.
If you like the bands performing theses tracks then buy it. If you like the Smiths then be careful, you may be left with a bitter taste in your mouth.

A brilliant compilation of old songs, but in new and, well, great ways.
Instruction and thisGIRL show they're upto the form, perhaps more than others, and Garrison really top it all off. A brilliant display of how today's up and coming talent are really paving the way for more to follow.
Essential for Smiths and rock fans in general. A good lesson to us all.

As most people have siad they're are defintly good and bad songs on this CD. Million Deads 'cover' of girlfriend in a coma is awful, and if i was morrissey i would Cry more than i ever had before.
Best tracks on this Cd would have to be: Cursive, Garrison, Walter Walter, thisGirl and The Beautiful Mistake
All others are pretty much good/okay, reasonable or Murder.
But defintly a good CD to buy if you like the smiths or these bands.
respect to Walter Walter for they're little outro on ask singing Just like heaven by the cure, genius!

I would say that this is not a bad album but neither is it great!! Most of the songs are interesting apart from "There is a light that nevere goes out"...which was murdered!!...in my opinion this album is perhaps a little un-neccessary as the originals are perfect and in my opinion can not be bettered!!

Not worth the money. 27 Nov. 2004
By Chelsea G - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I saw this in the store, and I just had to have it. Firstly, I love the Smiths, and secondly, I absolutely obsess over Cursive. I saw that they had done a cover of "Frankly, Mr.Shankly" and I bought it right away. I went home to listen to it, and I was disappointed. The Cursive song was great, as expected, but all of the other songs fell short.

If you're considering buying this, don't. Just download the Cursive cover and don't waste your time on the rest.

Ruining The Legacy 21 Nov. 2004
By M. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
When I bought this album, I was totally surprised and shocked in what I heard.

Yes, I knew it would've been all of the no-talent bands that are out today, but come on! I really didn't think it would've been THIS bad!! It is the worst record I have ever owned. This ruined the legacy of the Smiths, one of the best bands of all time.

If you want to hear REAL talented music, look no further than The Smiths or Morrissey.

Don't even waste your money, let alone TIME, on this crap.

I can't believe they didn't even learn the words!!! 24 Jun. 2005
By Father Morrissey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This album is a WASTE of MONEY!!!

Don't buy it!

I cannot stress this enough!

The singer/band (The Beautiful Mistake) for the Cemetry Gates cover didn't even bother to LEARN THE WORDS to Cemetry Gates! (and it's not like he made up his own -- he didn't, he just mumbled. How disrespectful to Morrissey, the genius who created the song in the first place. It's disgusting of Beautiful Mistake to sing that song on a commercial recording without even knowing the words...

What a waste of one of the most beautiful songs Morrissey has ever written! I was so looking forward to hearing this cover, I really was, and it was horrible and disappointing.

Do yourself a favor: buy all the Morrissey and Smiths albums if you don't already have them, and don't waste your time, money, or energy buying this third-rate covers album.

Surely the people who produced this album could have found some better bands/singers for this venture. What a unneccessary waste, especially on a project that could have been so good!!!

Absolutely Horrible!!! 27 Oct. 2005
By Jorge D. Veliz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
First of all I cannot stress enough how much The Beautiful Mistake butchered "Cemetary Gates" It makes my stomach turn. Every single song is butchered. To the point that it's disrespectful. "Frankly Mr. Shankly" "Panic" "There's a light..." such beautiful songs to just have some horrible band cover it. Every band on this cd shouldn't be allowed to record again. Cursive, Beautiful Mistake etc. should be fined for this.

Really, guys? 26 Feb. 2010
By Nicholas A. Keller - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Well, I had the cd for awhile and thought it was rather good. Sadly, it was stolen from me by some hoodlums and now I must buy it again. I am surprised at all of the 1 star reviews that this album got. This is a fairly good way to introduce the youngin's to a great band like The Smiths. Obviously the music doesn't sound like The Smiths, and it really doesn't come close. But isn't that the point of a cover album? I say give the kids some credit and stop being so crotchety.
