Being a country woman on a farm is not a job - it is a vocation for life, full-on, all the time. And no-one knows this better than Gwen Patterson, full-time farm worker, wife and mother! With her wit, equanimity, and ability to cope impossible situations are not only survived but laughed through. There is expert practical advice - how to share space with a gaggle of bad-tempered geese, being midwife to a calf, staying cool through the hay-making season - plus recipes and anecdotes. Equal parts how-to advice, humor, philosophy, and fond farm nostalgia this will appeal to anyone looking at the country way of life.

Review

Iowa" Farmer Today", Nov. 3, 2007"Being a country woman is not just a job, it is an encompassing way of life. But with wit and equanimity alike in Gwen Petersons' 'How to Shovel Manure and Other Life Lessons for the Country Woman, ' it can be survived.""

About the Author

For Gwen Petersen, the seeds of country living were planted during youthful summertime visits to her grandparents' Illinois farm and hours helping her mother raise chickens in their city backyard. When Gwen married a rancher, her background as an occupational therapist for the bothered and bewildered helped her some in figuring out how to cope with country life. After thirty-five years of muddling through--and living with an assortment of cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, cats, dogs, horses, and a gaggle of particularly nasty-tempered geese--she's starting to catch on. Today Gwen lives on a small place in Montana where she raises miniature horses and works on her attitude. Her humorous writings on barnyard foibles include magazine columns, cowboy and -girl poetry, and her book, The Greenhorn's Guide to the Woolly West."

5.0 out of 5 stars We do need another "How to" book 10 Oct 2007
By Laurel A. Lawrence - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Martha Stewart, Dr. Phil, and Oral Roberts have been telling us for years how to live. Somehow this author, living in big sky country addresses the real lessons in this book in a way that many of us want at this time. Even if there seems to be no need for the calf pulling skills or ability to raise and store enough vegetables to feed our families through a long Montana winter, her poems and recipes reveal a way to live every day. This gifted author inspires us with her humerous tales coping with nature and nurture. Maybe women want to be from the country and men are searching for a woman who knows how to shovel manure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Farm Life Yet! 30 Aug 2011
By GinnyLee - Published on Amazon.com

This is THE best book I've ever read about life on a farm. Written so it's very easy to understand, the book gives a realistic view of what farm life is really like without all the romantic fluff other books tend to make living on a farm. The author gives a very good insight about everything--snooty neighbors and all. Read this book BEFORE you decide to move "to the country". Farm life is definitely NOT for me and with the help of this book, I now understand the difference between living in the country and living on a farm.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'How To" book told with humor 20 Aug 2008
By Carolyn A. Garriott - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
How to shovel manure is told with a wry humor that can only be achieved when based on the unvarnished truth. Anyone who has ever lived on a functioning family farm will relate. Anyone who has not, should gain a new respect for the people who do. Not a side-splitting view of the country (however, that might be because I have been there-done that), but a heartwarming version of the life style for a vanishing way of life. Every young person should read this, if for no other reason than to gain an appreciation of our country's (no pun intended) history.
