Review

'This fast paced adventure is packed with hilariously named characters and mythical monsters that will grab any young boys attention.'

(Books for Keeps )

'genius'

(The Times )

'... full of charm ... imaginative and bursting with inventive, off-the-wall humour, making them great stories to be read aloud.'

(Waterstones Books Quarterly )

'another triumph from the creative pen of Cressida Cowell.'

(Writeaway.org )

'... inspired series ... its enchantment lies primarily in the comical, affectionate and often irritable relationship between Hiccup (the only nerd in the violent Viking Hooligan tribe) and his runty little dragon Toothless.'

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

'Fiercely exciting and laugh-aloud funny, it is as full of joy for children of 7+ who have given up reading as for those who love it.'

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

Irresistably funny, exciting and endearing

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE WEEK: This book is great fun and has a Blackadderish sense of humour ... full of the sort of jokes that will make schoolboys snigger. (Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times )

How to Train Your Dragon is a delightful narrative caper... It offers a challenging read to 11-year-olds, and rewards reading aloud, especially for those who relish an element of theatre at story time. (Sunday Herald, Glasgow )

... raucous and slapstick ... liberally illustrated with [Cressida Cowell's] riotous drawings, notes and maps. (The Financial Times )

[Cressida Cowell] puts a contemporary spin on the old brains over brawn moral and brings the story to a climax with a thrilling dragon duel. Lots for lots of different readers to enjoy. (Books for Keeps )

'a hilarious and gripping adventure, beautifully paced and studded with great dramatic scenes.'

(Amanda Craig, Times )

Bulging with good jokes, funny drawings and dramatic scenes, it is absolutely wonderful. (Independent on Sunday )

'Cowell writes laugh-out-loud books with plenty of boy appeal Cowells anarchic drawings suit the slapstick humour.'

(The Herald )

'If you haven't discovered Hiccup yet, you're missing out on one of the greatest inventions of modern children's literature.'

(Julia Eccleshare, Guardian children's editor )

Product Description

THE STORY CONTINUES in the seventh volume of Hiccup's How to Train Your Dragon memoirs ...

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. But it wasn't always like that. Hiccup's memoirs look back to when Hiccup was just an ordinary boy, and finding it very hard to be a Hero. Hiccup has three months, five days and six hours to discover America, get back to Berk, save his father, battle Polarserpents, AND win the annual Inter-Tribal Friendly Swimming Race. Can he do it? (Tick-tock-tick-tock-tick-tock)

How to Train Your Dragon is a DreamWorks film starring Gerrard Butler, America Ferrera and Jonah Hill, out on DVD in October 2010 adapted from the best selling How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell. I have read this series of books to my now 14 year old when he was younger and my now 7 year old and listened to the story CDs with all of the family including an older teenager on long journeys. I have found them to be enjoyed by both boys and girls. These are engaging stories which are irreverent enough to appeal to teenagers and pre-teens alike, they have humour that works on several levels, and I have to admit I thoroughly enjoy them myself as a middle aged man. Above all they are, perhaps surprisingly, quite aspirational with the geeks and the weak winning the day over the popular and the thugs, and winning by true self-sacrificial bravery and intelligence rather than by physical strength. This is an encouraging theme in our society of celebrity where the popular and the ignorant bully so often seem to win (whatever that means). For anyone who has seen the film/movie the books & CDs are almost unrecognisably better, and although the film was enjoyable it was an extreme Hollywoodisation of the original story to the point of being pretty much a completely different story with some of the same names (i.e. not even the same characters). David Tennant does a superlative job of reading the audio books. He uses a wide range of accents including special ones for the dragons which are pretty infectious and I now make some attempt at when reading the books. The Scottish accent in many guises seems appropriate for Vikings (not entirely surprising given the real life history of Viking colonisation). To summaraise if you are going on a long journey with children 6-16 this will keep them quiet for many an hour.

My 8 year old son LOVES this series of books and it shows in his art work. He now draws very detailed dragons with lots of different "features" that he has absorbed from the books. A great read for boys with lots of humour to keep them interested.

So brilliantly done, having David Tennant read this book was a stroke of genius. You don't have to have read all of the books in the series, but if you haven't, it will make you go out and buy them! Perfect for long car journeys - though we all had to stop in the car an extra 5 minutes to finish the story. Perfect for kids (and adults) of all ages, no more suffering with naff kids' books, buy them all of the Cressida Cowell books and never be bored again!
