Product Description

Synopsis

Pigs were once known as "mortgage lifters", a term that endeared them to small farmers everywhere. Even today, you can write and cash a cheque on a piece of pigskin. Whether you want a pig on your property for pleasure or profit, small scale or large, this is the book you must have. From the first consideration of choosing a breed to putting bacon and sausages on the table, this approachable and authoritative guide covers every facet of raising pigs. What are the advantages of raising pigs small-scale? What does it take in terms of resources, time, shelter, feed, healthcare? All these questions and more are dealt with by Hasheider, in step-by-step, down to earth writing, for a hobby, a business, or just to have one or two porcine characters around the farmyard. Also included is a glossary of terms, list of resources, and information about pork organizations, regulations, ordinances.

5.0 out of 5 stars how to raise pigs 24 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
a very good book, ideal for anyone looking at buying a pig or ten.
it covers everything from feeding to breeding and even has a chapter on fences(which is often overlooked).
if you only want to buy one book on pigs this is it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected 22 April 2012
By JBGEROW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
We are moving to the country and in the planning stages of building our "hobby farm". I bought this book hoping to learn how to raise and care for pigs on a small scale, with involvement from every family member. This book is more for those interested in large-scale pork raising. I don't plan on raising dozens of pigs, selling them or or their meet for profit. I was looking more for a beginner's guide to small-scale, family farming.

By Ryan Merritt - Published on Amazon.com

My mother bought me this book as a present after I bought a few pigs. It has been worth its weight in gold! I have used it to customize my feed, set my breeding dates and so much more! I recommend it to every one I sell pigs to!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a "how to" book 20 Dec 2013
By s l stringfellow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The name implies practical knowledge of how to raise pigs ~ It is basically a history and overview of the pig enterprise. It advises you to seek experts on health, feed, etc. On housing it basically states it is a necessity and provides an overview of different types. The pictures were more informative than the writing.

For anyone looking for practical information on raising pigs ~ this is not the book for them.

Book was good for over all information. I just wish it went into a little more detail on topics such as what age pigs can be bred. I couldn't find anything on this. But over all a good book for health, feed, housing, etc. I would recommend this book because it does have some very good information.
