I am about to rebuild the engine in my 1967 S-Type. So I wanted to know what to do to make sure its running within reason to the best of its ability.
This book is full of things to do that are more appropriate to high reving racing engines, rather than fast road.
Its worth a read, and I paid somewhat less than the insane £22 some sellers are asking.

This book will tell you that for anything other than full out racing, don't change the carbs (1" and ¾ is fine). Don't change the valve size, don't change the cams. You don't need forged pistons or con rods! -Unless you are going to run it at 6000 RPM.... 6000 - are you mad!!!!!

So I guess in a lot of respects this book has saved me money! -On expensive machine shop work I just don't need!

Think of this book as a Haynes manual. Its not as specific as it could be but its worth having if you can get it for about £10ish.

Lots of good general information about building a strong XK engine, but unfortunately doesn't really give you an idea on the sort of improvement you could expect from the modifications suggested. Anybody who is used to tuning books by the likes of David Vizard will be disappointed as there isn't any flow graphs, dyno results, comparison tables etc. to back up any of the modifications recommended.

A fair portion of the book also deals with general engine building techniques such as how to measure big end bearing and piston to bore clearances etc.

I would recommend this book to someone who was just looking for some general info on early Jag engines, but it is unlikely it will provide you with enough information to get the best from your engine without a lot of outside help.

For me it has raised more questions than it answered.

Interesting, detailed overivew. 28 Jun 2011

I bought this book, not because I wanted to tune up my engine, but rather I was interested in the topic and what people do. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. Since I didn't try any of the techniques I can't comment on their effectiveness, but they made sense. The book also goes into some of the pitfalls (for example fitting weber carbs and seeing performance go down because other necessary tuning to make them work has not been done).

Unless you're new to engine building, you'll be disappointed. There's not much info here that you can't get from service manuals or the web, the book's not very well written, and it's _very_ poorly edited.

YMMV, but I'd leave this one on the shelf.

If you have a jag with the XK engine in it, is there any other kind of real Jaguar, then this book is for you. You may not want to mod your rod but to read about the tips & tricks employed over the years in the tuners quest for horsepower is a treat.

Some of the tips are easy, not costly and have no negative effect on reliability, so you may want to put them in place. But when you want to really extract some hor$epower out of that venerable ole E-Type, reach deep into your retirement account.

But you will enjoy the smiles over the miles.

Ciao,
