This book is good!
It is a great gift to someone.
It covers all the basics, some nice pictures and illustrations and anecdotes on history of chess, a brief profile of the world's greatest players, some of the best games, some of the common opening traps, a nice set of appetizers, like a great chef's tasting menu.
The author talks about even how to study further (e.g. choose books by chess trainers rather than world champions, for beginner study), how to play further (internet, find tournaments), etc., even covers man vs. machine, Grandmaster inflation, child prodigies, and predictions for the next generation of world champions.
It is pitched at beginner level, and if someone goes through this very pleasant book, they would come out at intelligent beginner level. I tried a couple of tricks in the book, and it worked against better rated players.
To sum up, a little bit of everything. The best book to talk about everything in the chess spectrum. I am not surprised that this book is in so much demand that second-hand copies are selling for GBP 25 while the RRP is GBP 16.
