Do life's big questions perplex you? This book will give you answers to some of them while revealing that others have no answer. A humorous but informed instruction manual to questions philosophers have been asking and attempting to answer for centuries, How to Be A Philosopher will help you: Think, talk, argue and persuade like a philosopher, win every agument by tying people in philosophical knots, ask questions and raise doubts about things most people take for granted, realise that almost nothing is certain, get the absolute final word on that question about a falling tree. A practical guide to philosophising, the book explains philosophical ideas with examples drawn from such great works as Family Guy, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Matrix and Red Dwarf. The book also argues that learning to philosophise will help you think more clearly and honestly about your own life. The book even gives practical advice on how to make a living from philosophy!

"How to be a philosopher" is a Brilliantly entertaining and informative book that is a must for anyone who is interested in philosophy but doesn't know where to start.

The Book is intelligently written in that whilst providing the reader with a bare bones introduction to philosophy it also manages to be sufficiently detailed so as to increase the readers knowledge of philosophy (quite significantly so depending on your prior philosophical knowledge).

The witty sense of humour used in the book does wonders at keeping the reader engaged and interested in the subject matter whilst the friendly/relaxed style of writing adds too (as opposed to detracting like some books) the reading/learning experience.

The book seems very suited to the AS Philosophy course and covers most of the courses modules and so I would highly recommend it to anyone doing said course. However do not let it daunt you if you have never stepped near any kind of philosophical education as the book is easy to read and understand without being condescending or overly basic.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely brilliant! read it and know ... 16 Jan 2011

BRILLIANT!!! I really enjoyed this book.
'How to be a Philosopher' turns what is often perceived as a dull, dry subject into something that is highly relevant and engaging.
It's got lots of examples from the real world to support the ideas it explores. It's written with clarity and a great deal of thought for the modern, non-expert reader.
After reading this I feel I now have a good idea about what Philosophy really is.
Highly recommended as an engaging introduction to the whole subject of Philosophy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read 7 July 2012

This is the 3rd of Gary Cox's books I have read.

If you decide to start reading Gary Cox then I suggest this book first as it provides an overview in preparation for his other works.

An easily accessible, entertaining and informative introduction to philosophy - not meant as an in-depth study of any one approach, yet whetting the appetite for further investigation.

Recommended.
