I have bought the new edition (wouldn't you, the old one is listed at £30.99 new!), and it now has over 50 types of difficult people described. It features wonderful, positive ways to turn their difficult ways round. The one negative comment on the last edition was that it was very "layman", which is probably why the rest of us like it so much - we don't want a psychology textbook, just a few quick tips! Personally, one of the best bits of advice was in the Introduction, where Leibling says "We often talk about difficult people, labelling an entire person as `difficult' when it truth it may be just one aspect of their behaviour that we have found challenging." That struck me as a great starting point, to quote the author again, on `how to get on with people you don't get on with'. I showed my copy to a friend who is a CEO of a medium size enterprise, and she seized upon it eagerly - as she has every one of these people working for her. I enjoyed the fresh, positive approach, and Leibling's gentle humour throughout the book. Thoroughly recommended.

'How People Tick' offers practical solutions to possibly the most difficult
challenge many people face in their lives: how to deal with difficult people
whom you can't avoid, and who may have significant power over you. People at
work.
Leibling has identified a range of 'difficult' types. Apart from giving
practical tips on how to deal with them, he also gives us an insight into
why these people are the way they are. He invites us to look at difficult
types from a place of empathy. This in itself creates space to breathe, and
a willingness to try out some of his tips.
It's an easy read with a fair share of comedic moments. I recommend it
highly!

This enlightened book should be read and kept close to hand by anyone dealing with the general public on a daily basis.
The chapters are clearly laid out taking one systematically through the person, the problem, culminating with tips on how to deal with the "difficult" person. It is written with gentle humour, honesty and a conversational tone. The chapter on competitive people will strike a chord for those living/working with them. The idea of setting them more and more challenges is particularly appealing...
Within the comprehensive chapter lists the reader will encounter client, friend and colleague, and maybe even themselves.
Not just a helpful "How to" book it is also a celebration of the human personality with all its foibles.
