“an amusing read… how people tick scores on clarity. its pragmatic and helpful suggestions are more relevant to those coping with the day-to-day agonies of office politics than to organisations seeking help to draw up a staff behavioural code of conduct… leibling’s tone is just right, offering reassurance in the often turbulent world of human relationships in the workplace.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy solutions for a difficult problem, 6 Nov 2005
'How People Tick' offers practical solutions to possibly the most difficult
challenge many people face in their lives: how to deal with difficult people
whom you can't avoid, and who may have significant power over you. People at
work.
Leibling has identified a range of 'difficult' types. Apart from giving
practical tips on how to deal with them, he also gives us an insight into
why these people are the way they are. He invites us to look at difficult
types from a place of empathy. This in itself creates space to breathe, and
a willingness to try out some of his tips.
It's an easy read with a fair share of comedic moments. I recommend it
highly!

4.0 out of 5 stars How People Tick A guide to Difficult people and how to handl, 10 Oct 2005
This enlightened book should be read and kept close to hand by anyone dealing with the general public on a daily basis.
The chapters are clearly laid out taking one systematically through the person, the problem, culminating with tips on how to deal with the "difficult" person. It is written with gentle humour, honesty and a conversational tone. The chapter on competitive people will strike a chord for those living/working with them. The idea of setting them more and more challenges is particularly appealing...
Within the comprehensive chapter lists the reader will encounter client, friend and colleague, and maybe even themselves.
Not just a helpful "How to" book it is also a celebration of the human personality with all its foibles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading, 7 Mar 2006
By MR SIMON G B LUCAS (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
"How People Tick" is obviously aimed at the business community. However, the book contains so many useful strategies and tips in dealing with "difficult people" that many of the suggested solutions can be applied to personal situations.

The book is best used as a reference guide, but is also enjoyable as a "bedtime read" in order to improve ones own way of responding to people who are difficult to handle. The author provides many "true-life" examples, which are easily recognised as typical situations by us all. More importantly, these examples are a useful reminder of how the reader can change their behaviour in dealing with other people.

The author uses every-day language to illustrate the points made and one is left with the impression that the psychology of dealing with difficult people can be easily mastered. (I found it so.)

At £9.99 for nearly 200 pages, which is very reasonable, I thoroughly recommend "How People Tick - A guide to difficult people and how to handle them".
