This book is a must have if you want to be confident in your own ability to pass the higher. It explains every aspect of the course well ( apart from commenting on every text..) and shows you how to attack every type of question in a quick and concise manner. I bought this a month before my exam and after studying the texts hard and spending time practicing close reading skills found it a great way to summarise the whole course. It is really effective in getting you to try the questions and adapt your answers so that they are better. Don't know if everyone's thoughts on this are the same as mine but I feel it did help me to get an A pass!

This book is grand for those of us who hate Higher English and English as a whole.
It strips the course down into formulae, making it easier to digest.

This is far too complex - if pupils could understand this book they would not need to use it! Simpler and clearer explanations are needed. I doubt if this book would help anyone achieve a better grade at Higher English. English teachers might find a few tips they could pass on - but they would need to adapt the advice to make the material accessible to their pupils. I think that pupils working alone with this book would quickly get bogged down and give up the struggle.

I teach H English and can contradict the previous review. If analysis of literature does not come naturally to you - and how many 16yr olds can honestly claim that it does? Read more

Boring, boring, boring!
This is a turgid, tortuous and laborious read and I can't imagine a school pupil ploughing their way through this. Read more
