Product Description

Product Description

The easy-to-understand (non-boring) grammar guide you've been waiting for. How good is your grasp of grammar? Do you write clearly and concisely - or not? Effective communication through writing - letters, emails, reports, surveys, magazines and other publications - is what many businesses depend on. But how many of us know how language works? We all tend to be a little hazy when it comes to the principles of grammar, a problem which the grammar-free schools of the last thirty years have contributed to. Despite our best intentions we often end up creating confusing, jumbled or even impenetrable writing. How Not to Write sets out the basics and destroys a few myths. Easy to read and fun to follow, you will quickly polish up your writing and communication skills and increase your confidence. Deals with everyday issues. Identifies and clarifies common myths and confusions. Takes a down-to earth approach to grammar. Contains absolutely no baffling terminology. Includes gobbledegook masterpieces from The Plain English Campaign's archives. Provides 'Rights and wrongs' and simple exercises. Written in a lively style with a light touch

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential guide for business writers, 21 Aug 2007
By J. H. Young "The Confident Writing Coach" (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews

I'd recommend this book for anyone who needs to write as part of their work - and that includes most of us!

It's packed full of simple writing tips to get you writing in plain English - but what I really liked was the debunking of the grammar myths. These are "rules" that you might remember from school or college (or heaven help you, a grammar book) that get in the way of writing clear, concise, conversational writing at work.

This is good value book and well worth the investment, not just for the grammatically perplexed but for anyone who wants to be a master of plain English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammar Refresher, 18 Oct 2007
By Wyvernfriend (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews

It's a great guide to grammar and suggestions of how to write better business English. Littered with some real-life examples of corporate-speak this guide stresses simple, effective writing without jargon.

Terence Denman makes this normally stuffy topic quite readable and easy to follow. A book for almost anyone who writes as part of their job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy and learn, 12 Oct 2008
By Stephen Town "Steve" - See all my reviews

This is an excellent book. It's clear, easy to read and full of useful examples. I've read a number of guides to English usage, but I wish I'd bought this one first and saved myself some time.

I now understand a number of areas that were previously a mystery to me. The thing I like most about this book is the friendly, witty and very human tone. That's not at all common. Mr Denman has written an outstanding guide for people who want to improve their writing and understanding of English.

Written in the best plain English, the book comprehensively dismisses some well-established myths, such as not using split infinitives and not beginning a sentence with 'and'. I found the chapter on the active and passive voice particularly useful and easy to follow.

The book is clearly set out and has a helpful index that gets you quickly to the word or subject that you want to find.

I've also read several guides to punctuation and I heartily endorse Mr Denman's recommendation of 'The Penguin Guide to Punctuation' by R.L. Trask. This is the clearest and best guide ever written on this subject.

Many so called academics who believe they can write, and actually produce pretentious twaddle, would benefit from following Mr Denham's guidance.

Mr Denman, please write another book soon!
