Book Description

3 April 2012 0857082868 978-0857082862
How to defeat stress, worry, and anxiety to achieve more in business and life. From the international bestselling author of Self–Confidence. Are You A Worrier? Do you seem to worry more than most? Do you find that insignificant things stress you out? Do you sweat the small stuff and the big stuff too? Well, now’s the time to stop worrying and start living. Worry, stress, anxiety – whichever label you prefer to use – can have consequences that impact not only our lives, but the lives of others around us. When we worry it’s like the engine of our mind is constantly being revved up. It doesn’t allow us time to switch off and rest. It tires you out. And when you’re tired you’re less likely to think straight. And when you’re not thinking straight it’s easy to make stupid mistakes and confuse priorities...  But relax. There is a way forward. In How Not to Worry Paul McGee shows us that there is a way to tackle life’s challenges in a calmer and more considered way. It is possible to use a certain degree of worry and anxiety to spur us on towards positive, constructive action, and then leave the rest behind. With down to earth, real life advice, How Not to Worry helps us understand why worrying is such a big deal and the reasons for it, exposing the behavioural traps we fall into when faced with challenges. It then helps us to move on with tools and ideas to deal with our worries in a more constructive way.

From the Back Cover

‘Enlightening and engaging, you are bound to discover ideas and insights to help you deal with the pressures of life.’ – Rosemary Conley, fitness and diet expert ‘[This book] could go a long way to help alleviate some of the unnecessary worries that people become trapped by.’— Kevin Morley, Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire and former Managing Director of Rover Car Group Are You A Worrier? Do you seem to worry more than most? Do you find that insignificant things stress you out? Do you sweat the small stuff and the big stuff too? Well, you’re not the only one. We may be the healthiest and wealthiest generation that has ever lived, but we’re also the biggest worriers. It’s time to stop worrying and start living. Worry, stress, anxiety – whichever label you prefer to use – can have consequences that impact not only our lives, but the lives of others around us. When we worry it’s like the engine of our mind is constantly being rewed up. It doesn’t allow us time to switch off and rest. It tires you out. And when you’re tired you’re less likely to think straight. And when you’re not thinking straight it’s easy to make stupid mistakes and confuse priorities… But relax. There is a way forward. There is a way to tackle life’s challenges in a calmer and more considered way. It is possible to use a certain degree of worry and anxiety to spur us on towards positive, constructive action, and then leave the rest behind. Then you can enjoy, not simply endure the ride. And it only takes a small change in the way you approach stress to make this possible. With down to earth, real life advice, How Not to Worry helps us understand why worrying is such a big deal and the reasons for it, exposing the behavioural traps we fall into when faced with challenges. It then helps us to move on with tools and ideas to deal with our worrier in a more constructive way.

5.0 out of 5 stars he's done it again! 4 May 2012

Mr SUMO...you've done it again! This fab book takes a very serious subject (worrying, which makes you anxious, which creates stress, which robs you of energy and life!) and manages to boil it down to the basics. Lots of tips. Lots of real world stuff. Some great examples. And, in true SUMO style, some laugh out loud moments. I love the style and the tone. As human beings we're programmed to worry...but this book will help get things into perspective. Loved it

4.0 out of 5 stars Straight talking and accessible 9 May 2012
By CD
Format:Paperback
Very conversational and easy to understand, this book can be powerful if you know you worry too much and want to do something about it. Inevitably, it's also a book on reducing stress by helping identify the (often) low level noise that slows us down and robs us of joy.

Having read other material on this subject, the explanation of how our brain works and why we react the way we do, is the simplest and clearest I've yet come across. Crucially, it doesn't lose you.

This is a personable book laced with plenty of humour. It doesn't pretend to be something it isn't (an academic book) and often surprises with its straight talk. There is a strong sense that the author has worked hard to simplify the key messages and make them memorable. And he has.

By Carolyn
Format:Paperback
This book has helped me to step of the downwards spiral of negativity I sometimes find going on in my brain. I use the 'revised script'on p174 to stop myself escalating my worries and anxiety (and the book helpfully separates the two) into a form of self destruction which can negatively impact; not only on me but others around me. The idea of 'what I am feeling is temporary' is extremely useful before I press 'send' on my emotions to all and sundry. I've read all of the SUMO books and use their wisdom time and time again. Written in a down to earth and friendly style this is a non-academic, practical book for anyone to access and get immediate perspective, ideas, humour and support. Another ray of 'mancunian' sunshine from Mr McGee!
