Product Description

Product Description

This is a brand new picture book to help children understand the concept of big numbers. Pipkin the smallest penguin is always asking questions, but what he wants to know most of all is how big is a million? So he sets off to find out, and along the way meets a hundred penguins, sees a thousand snowflakes and meets one new friend before being amazed to finally find out how big a million really is. A special fold-out poster at the end of the book shows Pipkin looking at the sky, which is printed with exactly one million stars. It is gorgeously illustrated by Serena Riglietti.

fab book that shows a child visually how big 10, 100, 1000 and 1000000 are. my little boy has been trying to guess the biggest number ever for a few months now (did you know mommy, the biggest number is 162 10 11?) so being able to show him 100 penguins (we counted them) and 1000 snowflakes (we didn't count those) gave him some idea of size. seeing the poster in the back of the book with a million stars on is a 'wow' moment!

great buy and nice story too.

This is a delightful story. It follows a small penguin as he sets off to find a million. Pictures illustrate 10 fish, 100 penguins, 1000 snowflakes, and the final, huge, poster has 1,000,000 stars. I found the poster surprisingly fascinating, and my five-year-old niece loved it.

I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday, as he's crazy about anything to do with numbers. Whilst he was able to recognise large numbers, I wasn't sure that he understood the magnitudes involved, so thought this book would help him to get his head around this concept. The book achieves this by incorporating the numbers into the story: 10 fish, 100 penguins, 1000 snowflakes, and then the surprise ending depicting 1,000,000. It's also a lovely story in its own right - the illustrations are delightful. If only maths could always be this cute!
