Book Description

31 Oct 2007 Usborne Picture Storybooks
This is a brand new picture book to help children understand the concept of big numbers. Pipkin the smallest penguin is always asking questions, but what he wants to know most of all is how big is a million? So he sets off to find out, and along the way meets a hundred penguins, sees a thousand snowflakes and meets one new friend before being amazed to finally find out how big a million really is. A special fold-out poster at the end of the book shows Pipkin looking at the sky, which is printed with exactly one million stars. It is gorgeously illustrated by Serena Riglietti.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow a million is big! 3 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
fab book that shows a child visually how big 10, 100, 1000 and 1000000 are. my little boy has been trying to guess the biggest number ever for a few months now (did you know mommy, the biggest number is 162 10 11?) so being able to show him 100 penguins (we counted them) and 1000 snowflakes (we didn't count those) gave him some idea of size. seeing the poster in the back of the book with a million stars on is a 'wow' moment!

great buy and nice story too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and illuminating 11 Mar 2009
By CB
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a delightful story. It follows a small penguin as he sets off to find a million. Pictures illustrate 10 fish, 100 penguins, 1000 snowflakes, and the final, huge, poster has 1,000,000 stars. I found the poster surprisingly fascinating, and my five-year-old niece loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book which my numbers-mad son adores 25 Oct 2010
By Dr Um
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday, as he's crazy about anything to do with numbers. Whilst he was able to recognise large numbers, I wasn't sure that he understood the magnitudes involved, so thought this book would help him to get his head around this concept. The book achieves this by incorporating the numbers into the story: 10 fish, 100 penguins, 1000 snowflakes, and then the surprise ending depicting 1,000,000. It's also a lovely story in its own right - the illustrations are delightful. If only maths could always be this cute!

5.0 out of 5 stars A million stars 21 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is a must for little ones although I love it too. I bought it for my grandson of 4years and it is a firm favourite with him. Explains a complex number idea for little ones by building up from 10, as a story of a little penguin and his quest to find out'how big is a million'. I have to say we haven't actually counted the stars on the poster, yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have 16 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
I purchased that book on recommendation from a maths teacher and it's wonderful at showing a child visually how big 10, 100, 1000 and 1000000 are. I bought it for my 5 year old and through the lovely story of a little penguin in search of 'how big is a million' it gave him an understanding of bigger numbers. The poster in the back of the book with a million stars on is a 'wow' moment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute story 2 Jun 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lovely story and great quality book but the 1 million stars were a let down...they just look like tiny white dots on a sea of blue (hardly enchanting).

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow factor 25 Mar 2013

I read this to my mixed year 3/4 class they were really wowed by the look of it, pictures are gorgeous and made them realise how massive a million is. Didn't do any maths from it but quite easily could make into an investigation. Would recommend, just to share with your class. Great for year 2 .
