I guess like for most people, the microwave, to me, was the ugly white box hogging precious worksurface space, and only justifying it's presence when reheating leftovers or thawing out a joint, before banging it into the main oven. But the recession has made most of us be on the lookout to explore all avenues that might lead to financial savings.
My elctric oven has given good daily service for years, but with the recent hyper-inflation in energy prices, it's now diverting too much of my income into nPower's grasping hands. Which is why the ugly white box in the corner had begun to occupy more of my thoughts. Could I possibly coerce it out of its slumber and into money-saving mode? A trawl around amazon opened my eyes to just how many specialised items are now available for use with a microwave oven, from egg poachers that claim to produce a poached pair in under a minute, up to casseroles and steamers. Reviews seemed to suggest that cooking times beat a conventional oven hands down, and that flavours for many foods, especially steamed fish and vegetables, are even better than those obtained by gas or electric oven. And, largely being plastic, microwave cookware doesn't command premium prices.
So far, so good, but what use would all these shiny new tools be without knowing how to get the best out of them? So it was back to scouring amazon again, this time for a specialist microwave cookbook. The shortage of reviews for most of them didn't help with making a choice, but the CV of the author of 'How to Microwave' was persuasive, as was the inclusive price of under £3.00. The seller described the book's condition as being 'used - good'. But my copy obviously hadn't even been opened, and was totally unmarked. No dog-eared pages or dubious stains. But, best of all, the book is a little gem. No packing with obscure multi-ingredient, time-consuming dishes, and padding with numerous unnecessary photos, just pages of useful advice, and practical, everyday recipes. Subjects are organized alphabetically, with plenty of cross-referencing, to make finding what you want a breeze.
The tables are turning. The power-hungry electric oven is now being fed less and less of nPower's over-priced juice, and 'How to Microwave' is transforming the ugly white box into a money-saving little beauty.
