I know this season gets alot of hate because the whole season was set over 1 weekend but its still the same jack foolery packed into the final season with a heart breaking end.

Now im not going to review every individual episode, i will focus on the final episode as thats where most of the controversy is.

Its a shame that instead of half the season being the build up to the wedding then the other half ted and the mother (tracy) building their relationship and the eventual death of tracy it seemed this was all rushed into a hour long episode, i would like to see more of the gang in their 40's or 50's the moment when teds first child is born would have been so great to see as a family and his soul mate is what Ted has been searching for, i think that would have been an absolute delight to witness. Instead we get constant back and forwards years later which really did feel rushed.

Now to the heartbreaking part,.... Tracy, her passing absoloutey destroyed me for a few moments, it was so sad yet i kind of expected it after season 8's episode "The Time Travellers" which also made me shed a tear (also damn fine acting on Josh Radnor's part) after getting to know her through season 9 i absoloutely adored her, she was funny, adorable, and just perfect for Ted, i dont feel her death was done a justice i wanted to see The gang help ted as he coped with her passing i admitt that would have been totally sad but i think it would have helped with us seeing Ted at his lowest to the point at the end of the broadcast finale episode were ted wraps up the story of how he met the mother as we would have seen how much time has passed and maybe would have accepted him ending up with robin easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Series 9 1 Oct 2014
I cannot understand all the moaning and complaints about this series and the ending. For sure the ending was rushed and would have benefited from an extended final episode. I understand that some important scenes were cut in order to shoe horn the material into a standard episode length, if that is correct it was certainly a mistake. But the nature of the ending itself? I have ready many reviews that say that Ted and Robin were over each other and had moved on. That view misses the whole point; they weren't and they hadn't. There are enough clues throughout the entire 9 series run that this is the case. As for those who feel "cheated" because the show is all about the mother and not about Robin? Well, I am afraid that that misses the point. The show is not about the mother; it's about Robin. It is Ted's build up to telling the kids that he still has feelings for Robin. It is only the show's title that is about the mother - all is not what it first appears to be...but that wouldn't be the first time with this show and its clever use of flashbacks! A bitter-sweet ending.

Brilliant show. The mother is amazing, I will miss seeing new stories from these characters. But it's a show that is so good you can watch again and again

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing season/ending. Deserved better. 21 Aug 2014
What ever happened to the great comedy I loved up until season 6?!?!

Seriously season 5 for me was the last good season of HIMYM. The constant dragging of the wedding story arc was painful in season 9. It had a couple good jokes, but I couldn't help but get the feeling that the writers just wanted to get it over with. I found myself getting annoyed at the characters I was hooked on in the earlier seasons, Lilly in particular.

The ending also felt like a huge smack in the face. It's like the writers made a slap bet with you and they won. I really hope the alternate ending they have in the DVD is better than the original.

All in all, very disappointing season. It deserved so much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars A 100 Word Review 2 Sep 2014
The final season is very well done, and initially quite enjoyable. However, as most people have mentioned, I also believe the ending was rushed and unnecessary. My favourite character throughout the season was the mother, she was perfect, funny and really added a certain class to the show, however, what they did at the end really left me feeling irritated. They did not end Barney’s character very well and the show did not give us full closure or resolution. The show does end and disappointed or not, the whole series was very good. A bad ending to a great series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great season, not the best ending 20 July 2014
By Alex S
Like every other season of this show, it rocks. If any other show had tried to spread almost an entire season over one weekend, it would have been horrible, but somehow How I Met Your Mother's final season remains as funny as ever, which easily makes up for the not-okay ending; unlike others, I don't feel that the ending ruins the show in any way, but I do have issues with it.

- stop reading here if you want to avoid spoilers -

I firstly think that the ending is a little rushed - wow, Barney has a child, but only a few seconds later the plot moves on. Half the season should have been the final two episodes. Or, even better, an extended season. Secondly, Ted and Robin clearly don't work well together, and they moved on, so getting them back together is a bad idea. The show is about the mother, not Robin. If it had ended after four seasons, not long after Ted broke up with Robin, then it would've been fine. But not now. The show should've ended with, as promised, the Ted meeting the mother, and the worst part is possibly the lack of grieving. Here's the mother, kids. The mother's now dead. Oh look, Robin! The ending would be 1000x better if there had been a funeral scene for example, and perhaps showing Ted and Robin getting closer together over time as they grew older.

- end of spoilers -

While I despise the ending (and look forward to the alternative ending), the season is, overall, brilliant. A must see if you loved the other seasons.
