Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

No other sitcom is as gleefully inventive as How I Met Your Mother. The basic setup is familiar stuff: Five charming, good-looking twentysomethings pal around New York City seeking love and happiness. But many episodes have a narrative trick. For example, when his friends try to persuade Ted (Josh Radnor) from going on a date with the doctor removing the butterfly tattoo he got while drunk, their justifications send the show careening back and forth among three interconnected flashbacks. Other episodes repeat scenes from different perspectives, or leap forward, or interrupt scenes to provide necessary exposition. None of this is groundbreaking, but it is consistently smart and clever--and when combined with crisp comic dialogue and zippy performances, it's pure sitcom delight. This is a show that manages to make a gang's in-jokes actually funny. Season Three is absolutely essential for any fan of the show, because this is the season we actually meet the title character; after two years of preamble, the mother to Ted's unnamed kids finally appears! But there are abundant other reasons to get this season, including Marshall (Jason Segel, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) buying a crooked apartment, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) getting the yips and getting slapped, and the return of Robin Sparkles, Canadian teenybopper alter-ego of Robin (Cobie Smulders). There's a wee bit of unfortunate stuntcasting (though she doesn't embarrass herself, Britney Spears still sticks out by dint of sheer inescapable celebrity), but it's a minor flaw in an all-around superb season. Add in an abundance of commentaries, featurettes, music videos, additional scenes, and How I Met Your Mother: Season Three is clearly a must-have for fans and a great introduction for newcomers. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Ringing the changes 17 Feb 2010
By Blackhorse47 TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
After the annoying slowness in releasing season 2, it's great to see season 3 coming out quickly. If you haven't caught the show, or saw a clip and thought it was trying to be another Friends (which it isn't), the premise is that in the future Ted tells his children a story of how he met their mother. His story starts before that event and so we're left to work out who his future wife will be. This arc story lets us meet his friends who are his sometimes girlfriend Robin, his unpleasant womanizer friend Barney, and Marshall and Lilly, a sickeningly happy couple.

In the third season the show's format has settled down. The quick editing, changes in time frame, and the surprising amount of external filmed footage, for a sitcom, are now all familiar. The writers' strike happened during season 3, but it doesn't affect the flow too obviously. The arc story continues to be very slow to advance and the emphasis this year is more on the various permutations the main leads can go through in their sometimes rocky and sometimes close relationships. Mild spoilers here are that Lilly and Marshall are married and Ted and Robin part. The latter allows Ted to meet the always entertaining Sarah Chalke as a new recurring character Stella. Barney is his usual hilarious self. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars The start of a return to form 5 Sep 2009
By Mutt
Format:DVD
Series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and director Pamela Fryman have Barney pick up where he left off, mid-word, putting Ted and his quest for love back at the heart of the series, after it's misfocused sophomore year, in a season that finally seems to be going somewhere.

Josh Radnor is respledent when fully restored to the centre of attention while his superb supporting cast of Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan and the still somewhat illdefined Cobie Smulders along with recurring guest star Sarah Chalke are still given good material to work with and only Britney Spears out stays her welcome.

The creators have got there act together from the very outset of the third season and firmly reassert their control to bring the series back from a mid-season drag with a well crafted series of episodes that cover much of the same ground as the first season but in a far more convincing way.

Kids, a lot of weird random things have happened in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars love it! 8 Jun 2009
Format:DVD
This is irresistable. It has had me in stitches, and I can't wait for the next DVD to be available. Since Trouble TV has gone under it was the only way to get to watch series 3. The other reviews talk about friends, but it is edgier (if that is a word). I stumbled upon this series by mistake, and have some brilliant nights in since I did! I love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars How I Met Your Mother just gets better! 19 July 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I actually bought this for my sister's birthday but had to have a sneaky viewing myself. Third season in and HIMYM is as funny as ever, especially the continuation of the 'Robin Sparkles' story line. I also enjoyed watching the special features which included cast interviews and a blooper reel. Will definetly have to buy season 4!

5.0 out of 5 stars The story just keeps getting better! 1 Jun 2011
Format:DVD
I cannot get enough of How I Met Your Mother. Some people said that season 2 was less eventful as season 1 but I still loved season 2, but I have to say season 3 is the best season so far. This is a great buy and you will know this if you have seen seasons 1 and 2.
