At last! 23 Aug 2010
By RBond
Format:Paperback
I have been looking for a book like this to help me do maths homework with my son for ages. This one is PERFECT! It is so easy to understand.... quite chatty and informal. It really makes you believe that maths doesn't have to be scary or something that you can't enjoy. The most important thing, I think, is that it explains how maths is taught NOW which has changed in many ways from when I was at school. My son uses number squares and number lines and talks about numeracy not maths. It's a new world and one that I am so glad someone is able to explain. I would highly, highly recommend this book to anyone with primary aged kids.

I was initially put-off from buying this because of a typo in the maths I found on the preview pages available on Amazon, but it was just what I was looking for so ordered it anyway.

I'm happy to report that the book seems excellent. I like that it is written by a single person which lends a consistency and clarity to the whole work, making it very easy to follow. As well as the formal descriptions of the modern methods for teaching numeracy, the book is filled with examples of the sort of short cuts we as adults take for granted when doing mental arithmetic (things like, to divide by 5, divide by 10 then double the answer) so that we are more likely to pass these on.

I'm getting ahead of myself because my children are not yet 4, but this book already has me thinking more about what to do and what not to do in the basic number work and games we already play so that they will hit the ground running when they start to look at numeracy more formally.

very very very good 14 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I borrowed this book from Guildford library in September and have renewed it every three weeks since. It is now December and someone else wants it so I have to take it back. Not before buying my own copy, however. Naomi writes in elegant, clear yet informal English and effortlessly takes the reader through the four operations and decimals percentages and fractions. She explains succinctly and at a decent pace. She should write another book.
