Book Description

28 July 2011

This extraordinary book had its genesis in a series of concerts first staged in 2004. Over four nights Paul Kelly performed, in alphabetical order, one hundred of his songs from the previous three decades. In between songs he told stories about them, and from those little tales grew How to Make Gravy, a memoir like no other. Each of its hundred chapters, also in alphabetical order by song title, consists of lyrics followed by a story, the nature of the latter taking its cue from the former. Some pieces are confessional, some tell Kelly's personal and family history, some take you on a road tour with the band, some form an idiosyncratic history of popular music, some are like small essays, some stand as a kind of how-to of the songwriter's art - from the point of inspiration to writing, honing, collaborating, performing, recording and reworking.

Paul Kelly is a born storyteller. Give him two verses with a chorus or 550 pages, but he won't waste a word. How to Make Gravy is a long volume that's as tight as a three-piece band. There isn't a topic this man can't turn his pen to - contemporary music and the people who play it, football, cricket, literature, opera, social issues, love, loss, poetry, the land and the history of Australia ... there are even quizzes. The writing is insightful, funny, honest, compassionate, intelligent, playful, erudite, warm, thought-provoking. Paul Kelly is a star with zero pretensions, an everyman who is also a renaissance man. He thinks and loves and travels and reads widely, and his musical memoir is destined to become a classic - it doesn't have a bum note on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now That's How You Make Gravy ! 7 Sep 2011
By Brizdaz
Format:Hardcover
A memoir based on thoughts arising from the songs from the A-Z shows that usually span four nights of Paul's songs, starting night one with the A songs onwards, and finishing on night four with the Z song.
And like the title of the book (as well of one of the songs from the book) suggests,it's a bit of everything thrown in to make one unique memoir.
You don't even have to be a Paul Kelly fan to enjoy this book,or even know about the man and his songs, because the lyrics to all of Paul's songs that are mentioned are printed in the book,as the recalling and updating of his thoughts roll along (but don't worry you can also get the CD of Paul singing these songs as well,if you want to).
And if you're not a fan of Paul's after digesting this book, then you must be a harsh food (for thought) critic.
My compliments to the chef.
Loved it 'till the last drop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a cookbook! 1 Dec 2011
By Jeff in SF - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Mr. Kelly's memoir is an extension of his songwriting, and every bit as enjoyable. Perhaps more so! Nah...scratch that. The book and the songs are two sides of the same gold coin that is Paul Kelly.

The book is a wonderful blend of personal, cultural, historical, and spiritual narratives spread across 100 chapters, each based on one of Mr. Kelly's songs and sorted from A-Z. Occasionally a chapter will describe how a song was written, but more often the song is used as a starting point for Mr. Kelly to write about something even more meaningful. There's a lot to digest. It's quite an accomplished work!

If you're already a fan, the book will further confirm your appreciation of Mr. Kelly's talents.

If you're not quite sure, you just love great writing, or you've "heard something" about Mr. Kelly, get the book and the A-Z CD set, with all the songs from the book. Your only regret will be that you waited so long to discover one of the masters of the songwriting (and book writing) form.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great read 23 Oct 2012
By Latitudes - Published on Amazon.com

Witty and charming this book is simultaneously conversation and tale. I had owned it it hard copy for an age never quite got around to reading it and spontaneously downloaded the ebook format to take on around the world trip . This was a great move as Mr Kelly proved to be a perfect traveling companion and the kindle format meant i could bookmark all the literary and musical references I wanted to pursue when I got home. Mr Kelly has lived an interesting life indeed and been to some dark places his references to drugs and the drug scene are part of his story but what dominates this book are the musings on life Love country family literature music and history of an exceptionally talented erudite man. I have recommended this book to my friends, my 72 yo mother who is not familiar with Mr Kelly 's music and to all my family .A great read.
