Product Description

Product Description

How Linux Works describes the inside of the Linux system for systems administrators, whether they maintain an extensive network in the office or one Linux box at home. Some books try to give you copy-and-paste instructions for how to deal with every single system issue that may arise, but How Linux Works actually shows you how the Linux system functions so that you can come up with your own solutions. After a guided tour of filesystems, the boot sequence, system management basics, and networking, author Brian Ward delves into open-ended topics such as development tools, custom kernels, and buying hardware, all from an administrator's point of view. With a mixture of background theory and real-world examples, this book shows both "how" to administer Linux, and "why" each particular technique works, so that you will know how to make Linux work for you.

Not a sys admin book 24 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Don't let the subtitle fool you: there's very little about the OS internals here. It's just a good book for home users switching from another OS to Linux/Unix, nothing more. With that in mind, you can still appreciate Mr. Ward's way of approaching the subject: clear and concise with just a few examples, but straight to the point. All considered a very good book, but not what I had in mind by reading the subtitle.

Nice one! 8 Dec 2004
Format:Paperback
The subtitle is slightly misleading as you don't need to be a superuser to get full value from this book. Very well written and structured. Clear, concise, no waffle. A handy book to keep by the PC.

Insufficient 6 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
Whilst well written and interesting for someone considering beginning Linux, it very quickly lacks sufficient content to help solve problems. It covers nothing in sufficient detail to be really useful. Unless you can pick it up for a couple of quid, I would suggest reading around on the web, and buying something with more specific and complete content. Also, some chapters now out of date.
