Product Description

Product Description

This book is essential in understanding, investing and risk managing the holy grail of investments – structured products. The book begins by introducing structured products by way of a basic guide so that readers will be able to understand a payoff graphic, read a termsheet or assess a payoff formula, before moving on to the key asset classes and their peculiarities. Readers will then move on to the more advanced subjects such as structured products construction and behaviour during their lifetime. It also explains how to avoid important pitfalls in products across all asset classes, pitfalls that have led to huge losses over recent years, including detailed coverage of counterparty risk, the fall of Lehman Brothers and other key aspects of the financial crisis related to structured products. The second part of the book presents an original approach to implementing structured products in a portfolio.

Key features include:

  • A comprehensive list of factors an investor needs to take into consideration before investing. This makes it a great help to any buyer of structured products;
  • Unbiased advice on product investments across several asset classes: equities, fixed income, foreign exchange and commodities;
  • Guidance on how to implement structured products in a portfolio context;
  • A comprehensive questionnaire that will help investors to define their own investment preferences, allowing for a greater precision when facing investment decisions;
  • An original approach determining the typical distribution of returns for major product types, essential for product classification and optimal portfolio implementation purposes;
  • Written in a fresh, clear and understandable style, with many figures illustrating the products and very little mathematics.

This book will enable you to better comprehend the use of structured products in everyday banking, quickly analyzing a product, assessing which of your clients it suits, and recognizing its major pitfalls. You will be able to see the added value versus the cost of a product and if the payoff is compatible with the market expectations.

I am considering a career change and have recently been interviewing for finance positions. For that matter, I was looking for a book explaining the basics of structured products. Not the maths behind it, but the principles. This book fully covered my needs and the reading was fairly easy (sometimes even funny) until chapter 4. Then it got more complicated I must say. I persevered and the wording remained fluid, but the author takes the matter deeper than what I thought would be useful to know for a simple investor. It might be useful for an advanced investor to know the behaviour of the products during their lifetime, though (I'll tell you if I get the jobs I applied for).

I especially liked the "do's and don'ts", in which the author sometimes criticizes his own industry. I read across chapter 5 and 6 (in my opinion the least useful of the book) but was positively surprised by chapter 7, in which the author takes great pains to explain the basics of structured products on foreign exchange, commodities and interest rates, something I was definitely looking for. Chapter 8 seems to be for professionals only. As I said, the second part of the book is definitely not something for beginners, but (I think) rather for professional asset managers.

Overall, the author seems to have chosen to begin with the simple stuff and attempt to pull the reader along. I was satisfied, even though I couldn't use a third of the book.

A brilliant book 10 April 2012
Format:Hardcover
Factual and informative in concise English. The author explains concepts of structured products in such a logical manner that his thoughts provided answers to those queries that begin rising in your head as you track the book's chapters. Yes you do need some finance knowledge to appreciate its contents but having read more than a few finance textbooks in my time, I'd say this one is definitely one of the best.

I would say this book is good if you are about to start working in the industry. It is too in depth for the casual investor. If you want to assess what is out there there a few comparison website out there (google "spgo") which can help you compare products available at that moment. The book is useful in the fact that it doesn't contain pages of math which most derivative books do. Reasonable.
