Product Description

Product Description

Despite the threat it poses to human civilisations, the world is still struggling to take significant action on climate change. The failure of the Copenhagen Summit of 2009 to agree “what” or “when” action will be taken has left the climate with a 50/50 chance of producing weather never before experienced by humankind. Weather that may, literally, be impossible for humans to live with.

How to be a Humankind Superhero illustrates how we got into this mess in the first place and identifies the single core issue that must be addressed. It shows how the individual can play a real part in putting things right, by setting out a 12 step challenge for them to get involved to reduce their own impact and encourage change from businesses and politicians. By engaging, the reader can expect a 20 to 50% reduction in their personal carbon footprint and contribute to building an unstoppable force for change.

Individuals across the globe who are concerned by climate change often lack the information to engage in substantial action against it. How to be a Humankind Superhero provides the necessary inspiration for people who want to make an impact.

About the Author

Harold Forbes has always been aware of environmental issues and concerned for the future of his two teenage sons. The plastic bag campaign showed that there is a strong desire to look after our environment but it was difficult to know how to really make an impact. He decided to resolve that with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such an important book, 28 July 2010

I have been a colleague and friend of Harold's since the early 1990's, and hence I totally understand anyone thinking that this review is biased. In one sense it is. I have a very strong bias that as many people read this timely and important book as possible. It is well written, informative and empowering. The book's real strength is that it gives lie to the beliefs/attitudes that either global warming is 'too big a problem for any one individual to make a difference' or that 'to make a genuine difference I will have to give up so many of the benefits of modernity that I enjoy and value.' Read this book and discover how by very simple actions you, me, all of us can make a difference, still live in and benefit from the modern world, and ensure that the world will still be here to pass on to future generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, you can save the planet, 6 July 2010
At last, a book about what real normal people can do to help save the planet from the disastrous environmental course we are on. A very easy read and a breath of fresh air. No you don't have to live in a vegan tent commune living off the land to save the world! If everyone followed the advice which Harold Forbes gives, then us mere mortals, acting as a collective, can take on the Titan status of governments to reverse the damage we have already done to our blue planet. Not only will we have a cleaner and more pleasant environment, but also a wealthier (in every sense) community. Together we can stand up to the vested interests of the fossil fuel companies who are steadfastly destroying the planet we all live on.

We are now living in the middle of an energy revolution - Harold Forbes has created a manifesto for us all to follow to become a Titanic force for change from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources which do not destroy the environment we all need for life. As the ancients said, you can not eat gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Climate change stricks at the heart of what it is to be human., 6 Jun 2010

(REAL NAME)
OK, I'll admit that I'm the author so I declare an interest and am probably biased on the number of stars, but the following review is from the editor's report with his blessing (he being Ben Evans of Addleston & Cole).
'I enjoyed working on this powerful and passionately argued work of polemic. For me, it had a number
of key strengths. The confidence and ease of your conversational tone was appealing, and I liked
the way you weren't afraid to address the reader directly as `you'. In terms of your argument, you
managed to strike a winning balance in your use of examples: between hard evidence on the one
hand and more down-to-earth personalised anecdotes on the other. You also took in a very broad
sweep of references, from your Scottish grandfather to Amazonian tribes, which worked effectively to
universalise your argument. At first, I was unsure how you were going to make your 12 calls to action
fit with the mythical labours of Hercules, but strangely enough they provided an admirable framework
for your argument and a very apt set of analogies for the challenges involved. Most important of all,
however, the overall argument, when considered as a rhetorical construction designed to persuade the
reader, was assured and convincing.
Clearly a book written with passion and care.'
