5.0 out of 5 stars Rock-a by-Basie 3 April 2013

Great to see this available again after the vinyl succumbed. Such a fantastic lineup - and players (some) being introduced to each other for the first time.
And the Le Vrai Buck Clayton with Lytterlton has to be one his best sessions. Memorable stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars How Hi The Fi/Jumpin' At The Woodside 29 Dec 2011
By Kaare Westby - Published on Amazon.com

My favorite trumpet player all time is Buck Clayton. This is one of his very best recordings from the 1950's. A very high level of performance by everybody. I still have the vinyl of How Hi The Fi tucked away somewhere. It's great to be able to now have a Cd and be able to play it while I am driving my Cadillac Seville 1985. 5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best jazz two-fers ever! 22 July 2011

I knew who Buck Clayton was - he played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday, among others - but until I heard some of this music on a jazz radio program a couple of weekends ago, I was not aware that he did jam sessions.

This two-CD set from Collectibles is one of the best jazz two-fers ever. The playing is loose and melodic, the songs are great, and the musicians are obviously enjoying themselves. I especially enjoyed the tap-dancing break in "Rock-A-Bye Basie." The musicianship in this album, particularly from the great Woody Herman, who is featured on HOW HI THE FI, is superb throughout. The CD is in mono, but the sound quality is excellent.

Thanks to the Sony Music archivists for making these two albums available, and to Collectibles for releasing them as a "two-fer."
