I knew who Buck Clayton was - he played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday, among others - but until I heard some of this music on a jazz radio program a couple of weekends ago, I was not aware that he did jam sessions.
This two-CD set from Collectibles is one of the best jazz two-fers ever. The playing is loose and melodic, the songs are great, and the musicians are obviously enjoying themselves. I especially enjoyed the tap-dancing break in "Rock-A-Bye Basie." The musicianship in this album, particularly from the great Woody Herman, who is featured on HOW HI THE FI, is superb throughout. The CD is in mono, but the sound quality is excellent.
Thanks to the Sony Music archivists for making these two albums available, and to Collectibles for releasing them as a "two-fer."
