Book Description

23 July 2009 0273720937 978-0273720935 1

Entrepreneurs face a constant struggle to make a profit. They are entirely caught up in the day-to-day race against ever more demanding customers, rising material costs, a mounting tax and regulatory burden, increased international competition, and an ever more challenging labour market.

They rarely have time to get away from this ongoing struggle, to think about what they could do to find new customers, manage existing customers more effectively, cut operating costs, minimise their red tape, and get their staff working more productively. Yet, they know that if they could make even small improvements in those areas they would be able to revolutionise their businesses and their lives.

They are not alone in this. Few executives at larger companies have the time to address these issues. However, executives at larger companies usually do have the budget to hire consultants to advise them in all these areas. Entrepreneurs don’t. They have neither the time nor the money to address these issues.

Furthermore, entrepreneurs tend to be conquerors, rather than empire builders. Very often those who are best equipped to make it through the early years, are least well-equipped to build on that early success. Yet they are desperately keen to see a reward for all the work they put in to get their enterprises off the ground. They have both a need and a desire for advice on how to take their businesses forward.

This book is a practical guide, showing them how they can make those improvements with minimal investment of time or money. The ideas will be simply expressed, the action points will be clearly achievable, and the theory will be illustrated with examples of small businesses that have already grown by following this path.

By reading this book, and by following each of the action points, every entrepreneur will be able, over time, to cut costs, increase sales and boost profits. It will revolutionise those businesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the book, be inspired, change your life 9 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book in the airport on my way for a much needed break and a week in the sun.
I started reading it on the plane and was hooked immediately, continued reading whilst waiting for my luggage and then on the coach to the hotel. At this point I'd already started making new and exciting plans for my nine year old web development company.

By the end of the week I had not only finished the book but had also fleshed out a five year growth plan that will see my company expand five fold.

The book itself was a joy to read. Each chapter was well written, gave inspiring case studies and really made me want to get back into my office and start implementing new ideas.

For me personally, buying this has been a life changing experience. I urge any small business owner who wishes to grow their business to buy a copy today, you cannot fail to be inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging business book!! 11 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
This is certainly one of the best business books I have read. And as I am now running my third company, I've read a lot!

The reason I enjoyed this book so much was that it is straight talking, engaging and I didn't feel that I was just been lectured to. Reading it became a pleasure, not a chore.

It was like sitting down with a good friend who carefully explained everything I needed to know to grow my business, from the basics to the more advanced theories. And it did it in an engaging and interesting way. Much to my surprise, I found myself actually carrying out their tasks and drawing up plans as they suggested. And the reason was that on top of everything else, what they were saying made sense to me. I could plainly see the benefits to me of following the advice. I have put many suggestions into practice and am now seeing the results, while obviously claiming all the credit for myself!

The only thing I could see that this book was lacking was more information on all things digital. Especially how to market your business online. This is a complicated area and one I, like most other businesses, could do with finding out more on. I think this style would be good for explaining all the options and practicalities, so feel more time should have been devoted to that. But I guess there is enough crammed in already....."

I'll finish with a cliché. If you are serious about growing your business and only buy one business book this year, I'd certainly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars I should have read this book 2 years ago 22 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
I wish I'd read this book 2 years ago. At that point, we were a small business with me doing most of the work to keep everything ticking along. Now, two years later I've painfully learnt most of the lessons covered in this book.

If I'd read it two years ago I could have saved myself plenty of time, effort and (most importantly) money.

However, it did a great job of reminding me of some of those mistakes and refocused my mind on what's important in my role now. First job: rewrite my business plan.

If you're an entrepreneur running a business and wondering why you're struggling to get past the next phase of growth this is the book for you. Don't wait two years before reading it!

Enjoy.
