Book Description

29 Aug 2013
How Grim Was My Valley is a shockingly true account of a life lived in extraordinarily testing times in 1960s and 70s England. A working class village, emptied of its industry, provides the background to a thoughtful, upsetting and laugh-out-loud account of one boy’s story. This outrageous journey of success and survival will leave you wanting more and full of faith by the indomitability of the human spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Grim Was My Valley 3 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback
From the first page of this wonderful book, I was hooked!! and didn't stop until I reached the final page.

Chris Griffiths has the ability to quickly draw the reader into his world with a wonderful use of language and imagery that stays in the mind for along time ...popping ulcers with a pin ??!!!

I look forward to reading the next instalment of Chris Griffiths life .. I hope we don't have to wait too long

I would definitely recommend this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant with some humour thrown in 2 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book is a very open and honest personal account of a young person’s struggle growing up in a large family unit that came with numerous challenges and obstacles.
The book is very poignant and pulls at the heart but it also offers plenty of humour when Chris is faced with adversity that at times made me laugh out loud
I can relate very much to this book as it is where I also grew up in the 70’s (I even get mentioned a couple of times) and whilst as kids everyone seemed jolly and happy, and what I remember of Chris as a child he was always laughing and joking about his book reinforces that sometimes it is not all that it seems and a charade can be put on once stepped outside the family home.
The style of writing reminds me slightly of A Liverpool Slummy an autobiography by Pat O’Mara and Her Benny by Silas Kitto Hocking.
A good read and I would recommend you give it a go even if you didn't grow up in Weedon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended. 29 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A very funny, sad and poignant book about a young boy living in a small village and how they entertained themselves. And the strength of the human spirit and how if we're strong and determined enough we can overcome a difficult childhood, and grow into a well balanced, caring adult.
