Book Description

9 Jun 2011

A completely original history of one of the most extraordinary movements in the world – the Girl Guides – and how they helped win the war.

Mention Girl Guides to any woman and the reaction will be strong. They either loved them or hated them; they were either proud to wear their uniform or refused to join. Whatever their feelings, most former Guides retain strong memories of their experiences.

All too often regarded merely in terms of biscuit sales and sing-songs, hardly anybody is aware of the massive impact that the Guides had on gender equality and, more fundamentally, the outcome of the Second World War. In this eye-opening history, Janie Hampton explores how the Guides' work was crucial to Britain's victory. When the Blitz broke out, the Guides knew what to do. They kept up morale in bomb shelters, demonstrating 'blitz cooking' with emergency ovens made from the bricks of bombed houses at the request of the Ministry of Food. They grew food on their company allotments and knitted for the entire country. The embodiment of the Home Front spirit, they dug shelters, provided crucial First Aid, and also assisted the millions of children who were forced to flee their city homes to safer places in the country.

It is difficult to imagine what the war effort would have looked like without the Guides. Full of fond and funny anecdotes and rich social history, 'How the Guides Won the War' takes us on the journey of one of the twentieth century's most extraordinary movements.

5.0 out of 5 stars oh my word, read this book! 8 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
If you think guiding has nothing to offer - read this book and have your eyes opened

If you think guiding is behind the times - read this book and see how its always been at the forefront dealing with social injustice.

If you think guiding is a joke - read this book and see how guides across the world really did play a part in making a difference in the war years (and in peace time)

Yes I am a guide but I am actually embarrased and ashamed to say I don't think I could meet the standards and rise to and overcome the challenges that these girls faced.

The book has made me cry at times, its powerful and well written.

What strikes me most is how the author - never a member - started out to write a book to take the mickey out of guides but through meeting people and hearing about guides she changed her mind and ultimatley the style of the book.

Non members will be challenged in their perspective of girlguiding and current members should be proud to be part of the movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Girl Guides won the war 6 Sep 2010
By Andrea
Format:Hardcover
This book is totally amazing! I couldn't put it down. As a Rainbow Guider and have been in the movement since 1957 I recommended it to the "Brown Owl" who also purchased it and felt the same as me. I have since loaned my copy to "Tawny Owl" who isn't normally a book reader but she too is hooked. It is a very easy read and so well written. It has made me feel even more proud to be a member of Girl Guiding and I feel so much for the members during the war and just how very brave they were. It is very apparant that their input came, not only from themselves, but what they had learnt from Guiding. I am sure it would be a book for anyone, whether they are or have been involved in Guiding, or perhaps just interested in reading about very brave young people who did a great deal during those long hard years.
