Book Description

5 Aug 2010

A completely original history of one of the most extraordinary movements in the world – the Girl Guides – and how they helped win the war.

The Girl Guides is one of the world's most extraordinary movements: millions of women have been members. But what have the Guides actually achieved, since they began 100 years ago? Do they do more than sell biscuits, sing around campfires, and tie knots? In this constantly surprising book, Janie Hampton shows that Girl Guides have been at the heart of women's equality since the early twentieth century - when they were garnering badges like Electrician and Telegraphist.

Exploring modern-day girlhood through this very British institution's effect on global warfare, ‘How the Girl Guides Won the War’ reveals, for the first time, the dramatic impact that the Guides had on the Second World War. When the Blitz broke out, they dug bomb shelters, grew vegetables and helped millions of evacuated children adjust to new lives in the country. Many were taken as prisoners of war and survived concentration camps.

Told by the Guides themselves ‘How the Girl Guides Won the War’ is packed with rich social history, fond and funny anecdotes, surprising archives, and the lingering taste of smoky tea in a tin mug. Providing a new slant on both the Guide movement, and World War II, Janie Hampton's remarkable book finally gives the Girl Guides the historical attention they deserve.

Review

"a fascinating oral history...As the government gropes for some substance to add to its vague talk of the Big Society it could do worse than to look at this prelapsarian tale of duty, teamwork and cheerfulness." --Daisy Goodwin in the Sunday Times

`absorbing and unexpected story...the book is packed with heart-breaking stories of the girls' courage in extreme situations...the descriptions linger long in the mind.' `Hampton never lets us forget that these courageous girls were only children and in so doing, delivers another story: that of the optimism and buoyancy of youth. In the face of sometimes intolerable conditions, songs, laughter and little routines edged out the harsh realities of war. This is a sobering and inspirational book.' --Juliet Nicolson, Mail on Sunday

'Remarkable for casting a glorious light on the oddest corners.' Telegraph Books of the Year --Juliet Gardiner

5.0 out of 5 stars oh my word, read this book! 8 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
If you think guiding has nothing to offer - read this book and have your eyes opened

If you think guiding is behind the times - read this book and see how its always been at the forefront dealing with social injustice.

If you think guiding is a joke - read this book and see how guides across the world really did play a part in making a difference in the war years (and in peace time)

Yes I am a guide but I am actually embarrased and ashamed to say I don't think I could meet the standards and rise to and overcome the challenges that these girls faced.

The book has made me cry at times, its powerful and well written.

What strikes me most is how the author - never a member - started out to write a book to take the mickey out of guides but through meeting people and hearing about guides she changed her mind and ultimatley the style of the book.

Non members will be challenged in their perspective of girlguiding and current members should be proud to be part of the movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Girl Guides won the war 6 Sep 2010
By Andrea
Format:Hardcover
This book is totally amazing! I couldn't put it down. As a Rainbow Guider and have been in the movement since 1957 I recommended it to the "Brown Owl" who also purchased it and felt the same as me. I have since loaned my copy to "Tawny Owl" who isn't normally a book reader but she too is hooked. It is a very easy read and so well written. It has made me feel even more proud to be a member of Girl Guiding and I feel so much for the members during the war and just how very brave they were. It is very apparant that their input came, not only from themselves, but what they had learnt from Guiding. I am sure it would be a book for anyone, whether they are or have been involved in Guiding, or perhaps just interested in reading about very brave young people who did a great deal during those long hard years.
