5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational 11 Jun 2012
By K
Format:Paperback
My daughter just finished her AS levels and was extremely stressed out by a potential application to read History at Oxford - she had some support from school but felt that between competition from her peers and pressure from the teachers, she was getting quite burned out from it all.

After reading this book, she has completely turned her attitude around. She is now a busy little bee on her reading and extracurricular activities but the main thing is she is so positive and upbeat about her subject. This book has been a fantastic inspiration for her, and I think unlike some of the bad advice of "things she has to do" which both we and the school have given her, the author seems to push the right buttons to get her going without her feeling like she is being given set tasks to do.

I am so pleased about this change of attitude, and I 100% recommend this for all parents of Oxbridge applicants - especially if you have a child who is not someone who likes to conform to the tired, one size-fits-all advice that's out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good 16 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
Quite a strange one, but I found that I really warmed to it after initially being put off by the format. It's a quite a plain book. No pictures, one or two diagrams and that's it. So do prepare yourself for a lot of big paragraphs. Having said that, its nicely written and you won't mind reading the text. It even manages to be quite entertaining from time to time.

I found the college selection tool pretty useful for making a shortlist of colleges. The decision is still quite difficult and I needed further reading and visiting online, but it definitely saved me time. Personal statement chapter was very thorough with good examples.

I think the interview section is very comprehensive. I read the other sections which were not even related to my subject because the way they are presented are great and nicely structured. I read all the science answers and found them quite informative despite me being a total non-scientist.

Definitely useful for information for my application. I also think it functions well as just a "book" as it is very readable, and I do find myself going back to some chapters already.

2.0 out of 5 stars FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS 13 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is aimed at overseas students, judging by some of its advice. Telling applicants to be "humble" and write neatly and in large print if they want a good teachers' reference is of no use here. UK assessment methods moved on from this fifty years ago. The author also puts too much emphasis on extra-curriculars, claiming that one applicant got into Oxbridge thanks to having trained in his free time as a swimming pro. Both universities have made it amply clear that they don't award points for such activities.

I was most concerned about the college advice. This is made to appear scientific by its table format, but is actually not very good. For a start, students are advised to choose a college by asking themselves whether they are better than their competitors, level with them or below them. This, alas, is little more than a self-confidence test. Real comparison is often impossible, as most schools will only be sending a handful of Oxbridge applicants, and each of these may well be applying for a different course. Moreover, all will have A-grades. As a result of reading this book, those students who are most full of themselves are likely to aim highest.

Some of the rest is so over-simplistic as to be misleading. While the author rightly steers all but the best students away from top colleges such as Trinity, Cambridge, or Merton, Oxford, he is quite wrong to direct the weakest ones towards colleges originally founded for women. Such students might as well not apply at all, as these colleges, too, have rather high standards. They certainly far prefer able candidates passed on to them by other colleges to weak but direct ones. Many colleges also have very individual entry criteria in terms of an applicant's schooling or interests.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely the most helpful application book 19 Jun 2012
By Gene
Format:Paperback
This is a really clever book which starts off with some general sounding advice and tips, but quickly moves on to things that I never would have considered or even heard of! Small things like getting a top teacher reference, how to research your potential college interviewers, and really smart examples of interview questions and answers, as well as simple things like bringing emergency cash in case your train is late getting into Oxford or Cambridge. This is the best guide out there for both the "big" topics as well as the little things.
