Product Description

For most people thinking of starting up in business, the biggest obstacle is how to raise the funds to get the business off the ground. This is the book to take the pain out of financing your start up – it explains all the possible sources of funding, and their pros and cons, before helping you work out how much you actually need, then what to say and do to land that investment.

This is the book that provides the facts, the figures and the reassurances you need to make the right decisions for you and your business. It covers everything from finding investors, persuading them to back you, the principles of giving away equity and bootstrap start ups at very low cost – and everything in between.

For each possible source of funding, from re-mortgaging and loans, business angels and venture capitalists, to some of the lesser known (and not advised) techniques like the “5 card trick”, we’ll walk through: what each is looking for; whether this is the right route for you; how best to find them and pitch to them successfully; how much they might be willing to lend; questions they will ask and questions you should ask.

How to Fund your Business takes the fear out of finance, and looks at what happens if it all goes wrong and you need to borrow more – plus where you stand financially if the worst happens and the business doesn’t work.

It’s also packed with advice to help you make sure this doesn’t happen, with vital sections on accurate budgeting and forecasting and managing cashflow so you don’t run out of money. Timelines show clearly at what point each type of investor will want their money back, and at what cost, to make sure you have no surprises along the way.

HOW TO FUND YOU BUSINESS

BACK JACKET

How do you raise the money you need to get your business off the ground, to help it fly even higher, or simply to keep it in the air?

This is the challenge that entrepreneurs and growing-business managers wrestle with all the time - and this book provides the answers.

Written by an entrepreneur for entrepreneurs, How to Fund Your Business explains:

  • How to get your business 'funding ready'
  • What investors and financiers want
  • How to present your business to potential funders
  • All the different types of funding that are available
  • The stages, small-print, ratings and contacts for many sources of funding
  • How to negotiate with funders - including Venture Capitalists
  • What to do once you've got the money

How to Fund Your Business distils all this real-world experience into an essential, easy-to-read guide to getting the money your business needs - whether it's £500 or £50,000,000.

Funding your business is too important to leave to the accountants, so this is not a book of boring, complicated jargon.  This is the practical know-how you need to have to get the money to make things happen for your business.

‘I used the advice in an advance copy of this book to undertake a funding round. We successfully raised over £1m to grow our business. One international bank told us it was the best proposal they’d seen in four years. This book really works.’

David Fleming, Finance Director, Red 5 Retail Ltd

This book puts a grown up perspective on raising start up cash. What seems like the most obvious way forward might not be the best for your business now, or in the long term. Steve Parks goes through the options available and explains when and how to use each one. Finance isn't my favourite subject but this is clear, easy and detailed enough to set you off on the right track.

If you are looking for finance for your business - whether it is at start up or growing stage - this is for you. I have been a fan of Start Your Business Week by Week since I first got my hands on it and this follow up is full of details on all the different types of funding available to entrepreneurial businesses, with comments and ratings on them all.

It is written by an entrepreneur, and you can really tell, as it is far more easy going and accessible than anything I have read on raising finance before. (Sorry to any book writing accountants out there, but I am not great with spreadsheets on their own and this book has a great way of explaining the process and what needs to be done.)

It says on the back cover "This is the practical know-how you need to have to get the money to make things happen for your business." and I think that really is the best way to put it.

If you need to raise any money AT ALL for your business - read this first!
