DVD Description

HISTORY’s ground-breaking series together for the first time.

Spectacular on-location footage, evidence from geologists in the field and clear, dramatic graphics combine in this stunning series from HISTORY™, revealing how the immensely powerful – and at times violent – forces of geology have formed our planet.

From the Great Lakes to Iceland, the San Andreas Fault to Krakatoa, How the Earth Was Made Season One travels the globe to reveal the physical processes that have shaped some of the best known locations and geological phenomena in the world.

In Season Two we go back 4.5 billion years, peeling back layers of rock, filling up river canyons, parting the oceans and levelling mountains and volcanoes to reveal the origins of some of the most well-known locations and geographical phenomena in the world. With rocks as their clues and volcanoes, ice sheets and colliding continents as their suspects, scientists launch a forensic investigation that will help viewers visualise how the earth has evolved and formed over billions of years.

• Includes all 26 episodes.
• 8 discs and almost 20 hours of footage.
• Spectacular on-location shooting.

I have really got stuck into this show. I find it fascinating how science and scientists are able to piece together how the earth is constructed and how it has evolved (and still is). The science is explained in layman's terms with some good CGI and animation to illustrate certain points. Picture and sound quality on DVD is good even with some of the archive footage. The narration can be a little too over-enthusiastic at times, but that doesn't really bother me.

However, I do have a few real gripes with this show (and the more I watch it the more it irritates me). It is the padding with repetitive clips and recaps. The episode on Krakatoa was a good example, I must have seen the same CGI eruption about 6 times.

I also get the feeling that I am being treated like I have a short term memory problem. Throughout the show I am being reminded of what it was I just watched (cue repeated CGI/animation/sound byte). Then the narrator announces what is coming up in the next scene!!

They need to take a leaf from BBC Earth:
Introduction, Main Show, Conclusion.

With this show you get:
Introduction, what is coming up throughout the show, bit of a show, repeat, recap, what's coming up next, bit more show, repeat, recap, bit more show, repeat, recap, recap whole show

This is as a result of the show being broadcast on TV with breaks every few minutes and the need to keep viewers tuned in or for those just tuning in, to remain. You don't need to do it for a DVD, so a good bit of editing and the show could be so much more polished and professional in terms of an educational DVD.

Bottom line - Good value for money, and informative. Unfortunately, the poor editing from segmented broadcast episodes to single stream DVD episodes has spoilt what would otherwise be a first class show.

One of my favourites. 17 Dec 2011
Format:Blu-ray
I've probably seen most of the episodes contained in this box set on the History Channel, but I don't mind that. I really like this series and how each episode is presented. There are three disks for each season with four or five episodes on each disk. Would have preferred it if they had used the British narrator from the history channel rather than the American one they have used. I don't recall seeing any extras on the disk, but I never watch the extras anyway, so may have missed them.

Can't really say the quality of the bluray is all that sparkling. Doesn't seem much better than standard def at times. This may just be a result of the filming techniques used in making the progs. There's no HD sound, but my AV receiver does a reasonable job of pumping out a passable sound track.

All in all this is a worthwhile natural history box set for your collection. If you can get over the picture and sound quality issues, it's a good watch.

I saw some of the episodes from this series on TV and since I've developed an interest in geology I thought it would be good to get the complete series as I found the programmes very interesting.

I only watched one episode so far, but there's a problem with how the image is presented on the screen. I have an HD telly in the standard widescreen format (16:9). It turns out that, though the series was recorded in 16:9 format, the transfer to DVD was done in 4:3 letterbox format. This means that when I view the programme on my telly it has a huge black border all the way round it. I can use the TV controls to zoom in so that the programme fills the whole screen, but the quality is poor in this case. Normally my DVD player upscales to 1080 resolution and the quality is excellent, but not in this case.

In summary, if you have an HD widescreen telly don't buy the DVD of this series. I presume the blu-ray version doesn't have this problem, and I wish I'd got this instead.
