Product Description

The huge popularity of vampires as subjects of novels, graphic novels, films, and other entertainment media has created a steady demand for convincing illustrations of vampires in gothic settings. This book shows both beginners and experienced commercial artists how to compose impressive, spine-chilling, professionally-finished vampire illustrations that also include renditions of the vampires' victims and companions. Author Ian Daniels offers inspiration by presenting spooky gothic illustrations in a wide range of styles, which he supplements with tips and tricks for adding those extra details that give each picture a powerful emotional impact. He also presents a directory of character types from the preternatural world that will inspire students and serve as starting points for their own original creations. The book is filled with atmospheric full-color illustrations and enlightening instructional sketches.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delicious Banquet of the Elegant and the Dark. 16 Oct 2011
By T. R. LAVALLEY - Published on Amazon.com
I am simply amazed I have the good fortune to be the first to review this book.

While this is primarily a book about painting, the Level of Drawing is superb; I love drawing as an art for it's own sake and I am as harsh a critic as you will find of 2nd rate work (including my own.); the work in this volume is simply wonderful to my eye, beautifully executed with a strong naturalist feel; if Vampires were real, this is just what they would look like; but beyond simple skill in rendering, there is the ability to communicate, tension, suspence, emotion, and thats all here, and in spades.

One of the first things I noticed was this Chupacabra which just happens, in my mind, to Double as a near perfect concept drawing of a Gnoll. Moving on nearly ever page I turned was a treat, in terms of either the Ideas, the Execution, or both; again this book is primarily about painting, so the book is filled with wonderful full color images like the Priestess, but most of the paintings, and nearly all the larger works, are accompanied by a rendering of the preliminary sketch; and again the drawings are executed at a very high level skill, obviously quite finished studies.

While the book is advertised as being appropriate for beginners as well as more accomplished artists; I have to say, I think the more advanced the artist, the more your going to get out of this volume; the text is pretty well focused more on beginners, but the Art, the Art is definitely going to get your creative juices flowing, and is certainly going to appeal to and challenge more accomplished artists.

That said, I found the few pages on drawing the face and head, as well written as any I have ever seen, pointing out a new relationship between the position of the nose, and limits of the mouth I had never learned before, and I have a passion for portraiture, 90/95% of my own work is Portraiture; that I should find something new in a 'Beginners' book is really pretty impressive, and I don't think I'm being vain here.

If you have an interest in the subject, or just in drawing Elegant and Aristocratic characters, I think this book will prove well worth the money. ;) Blessings, BB.
