An excellent drawing reference, 11 Sep 2002
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 27: Male Characters: Male Characters v. 27 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Unnumbered)) (Paperback)
This book book is a brilliant buy for anyone interested in character design, figure drawing, and anybody who loves manga!
The book initially teaches you how to draw the human figure competantly and how to build and develop your own characters through a range of excellently illustrated diagrams. The diagrams are well labelled, explaining each illustration and giving useful tips which help improve your own drawings.
The content of the book is basically, drawing the male form, basic poses, male clothing and accessories and techniques by proffessional manga artists.
I guess you're wondering why I have given this book all this praise and only awarded it four stars, well I personally thought that the diagrams were rather cluttered and the layout made finding what you want rather hard. One other thing is don't expect many examples of male manga characters, there are supprisingly few, it is mostly concentrating on human anatomy. Overall this book is a good buy if you are specifically interested in drawing male charaters, but my favourite drawing book in the how to draw manga series has to be "Anime and game characters: mastering battle and action poses", now thats a five star book!

It was very good in terms of proportion, and in terms of poses but it did tend to skip over bits like individual facial features and hair. I have a few of these HTDM book and i feel that the authors tend to care more about the appearence of the female characters. So i would not recomend this to a beginner but i would advise it to someone having difficulty in drawing male proportions properly.

Very useful book!, 13 Nov 2011

Just what I was looking for! I wanted a book which explores male anatomy in detail, and that's what this book does. I was really pleased with the range of poses offered in this book- for example it includes stretching, sitting (in a chair and on the ground), squatting, crawling and crouching. I liked that the book included how to draw older men as well, showing for example how to draw a stooping posture and a wrinkled face.
