Product Description

Product Description

Our understanding of how dogs think is littered with common misconceptions about the extent of their intellect and how they make sense of the world around them. How Dogs Think unravels the mystery of what a dog can understand and how much dogs can learn. World-renowned dog expert Stanley Coren explores the thought processes of dogs, describes how dogs solve problems, explains the depths and limits of their thinking and examines the kind of concepts which dogs can and cannot deal with. Along with practical advice for people who want to improve their dog's learning ability and working intelligence, How Dogs Think will answer such questions as: Do dogs have a notion of time? To what extent do dogs understand what you say? How sharp are their senses? What do they see and hear? Do dogs have a sense of music, humour, empathy, guilt or love? Do they learn by observation the way that people do? How much can they remember? Do dogs have ESP or the ability to predict earthquakes, and is it true that they can detect cancer or the onset of an epileptic fit in their owners? Drawing on all the latest scientific research, How Dogs Think will enable dog owners everywhere to understand more about what goes on in the mind of their best friend.

I bought this book after id been attending obedience classes with my dog and i really wish id bought it before i even bought him. It is a very informative book which shows how sometimes what we think a dog means by his actions can be the complete opposite of what he actually means. I recommend anybody who owns a dog or is intending to get one should get this.

I borrowed this book along with several others from my local library to help with a dog cognition assignment i was doing at university (where i am doing an animal behaviour and welfare degree) and out of all the books i borrowed i found both stanley coren books (how dog's think & the intelligence of dogs) quite.....boring, which is really saying something since i obviously enjoy learning about dog behaviour and am very interested in the subject as want to be a dog behaviourist.

I just feel like he has spread himself a bit too thin, I think he would have been better off combining all 3 of his books into 1 overall one that just discusses dog behaviour and intelligence, the individual books failed to hold my interest and i just thought they went on at some points, there are much more interesting books out there to read, im sure stanley coren has a lot of experience and it is good that he has chosen to publish some work and share his experience with everyone... but 1 larger book may have been better as i don't see why there are 3 or 4 books by him with very similar topics when he could have just combined them and left out the waffle.

I did manage to get some good info out of the book for my assignment, but it was few and far between and quite hard to get at, hence why i have rated the book 3 stars. It was just a bit too all over the place for my liking.

I used this book in conjunction with a home study course on dog behaviour. I found it very helpful for giving reasons for my chosen diagnosis and treatment for problem behaviour in pet dogs. I also found the stories regarding his own dogs very amusing and reminded me of many dogs I have come across.
